Edgar Taylor Close SUGAR LAND-Edgar Taylor Close, 83, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away on March 17, 2014, in Richmond, Texas. He lived in Wheeler County throughout his youth and attended school most of those years in Shamrock, Texas, so it is fitting that this Shamrock Irishman passed away on Saint Patrick's Day. No funeral services or memorials will be held at this time, because Edgar chose to generously donate his body to University of Texas-Houston Medical School. A graveside service will be held at a future date when the medical school releases his ashes to the family, and burial of ashes will follow at Shamrock Cemetery. Edgar was born in Lela, Texas, to James Harvey Close and Alice Louise Taylor Close on August 24, 1930. He attended Shamrock schools for most of his education and attended Texas Tech University for a while before enlisting in the Navy during the Korean War. Following his Naval service, he worked in Lubbock for Mrs. Baird's Bread for the next 30 years before retiring. Edgar attended the Methodist church all his life and loved singing in the church choir. He was a member of the Lubbock Lions Club and was named Lubbock Lion of the Year. In 2011, Edgar moved to Sugar Land, Texas, to be near family, and spent his last three years surrounded by family love and new friends at his beloved Greatwood at Sugar Land retirement facility. Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Alice Close; and sisters, Mary Alice Close Wittenburg and Nance Close. Edgar is survived by brothers, Jim Close and wife Donna from Hereford, Texas, and Dan Close and wife Linda from Greybull, Wyo.; nieces, Cindy Close Sublett, Paula Wittenburg Sage, Denise Close Page, and Mary Anna Wittenburg Beard; nephews, James Mark Wittenburg and William Michael Wittenburg; 13 great-nieces and nephews; and 14 great-great-nieces and nephews. Edgar's family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Greatwood at Sugar Land, his doctors, his caregivers, and all his friends at Greatwood.
