James Arthur Hackney Jr.

James Arthur Hackney Jr., age 71, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, WI after a long time suffering with Agent Orange. James was born Feb. 23, 1942 to James and Tempie (nee Morrison) Hackney Sr. in Lufkin. He grew up in Lufkin and received a BA in Music from Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins. On June 7, 1984 he married Marianne McConley in Killeen. After their marriage they lived in TX, Germany, NC, AL, and WI following their careers in the U.S. Army. While in the military, he served in the Artillery and Ordinance fields. James was a soldier for over 22 years, serving in the Vietnam War and obtaining the rank of 1SG. As a civilian he was a musician and taught music in the public schools. His musical talent gave him the opportunity to play the keyboard/B3-Hammond organ with many well known musicians such as Ike and Tina Turner, Bobby Blue Bland, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Al Green, and Luther Vandrose under the name of James 'Hurricane' Hackney. James was a member of the Non-Commissioned Officers Association, Musicians Union, Long Chapel Church in Lufkin, motorcycle clubs in Germany and NC, and a Corvette club in Germany. He was a boating fanatic, owning four cabin cruisers over the years and also enjoyed driving luxury cars. In college, James nickname was Hop. He was dashing, witty and charismatic. He loved entertaining others, but most of all he treasured the time he spent with his family and his beloved German Shepherds. James is survived by his loving wife, Marianne, children: Felicia Salone of Houston, Elizabeth Hackney of Hot Springs, AR, James Hackney III (Eva David) of New Orleans, LA and Desiree Hackney of Frederick, MD; grandchildren, Crystal Salone, DJ Hackney, Aaron Hackney and Mariah Hackney and two great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Sharlotte Rutledge, Sandra Hackney and Sherylle (John) Fuller; mother-in-law, Theresa Kempfer and his companion, Bubi the African Grey Parrot. James was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorials be made to the Homeless Veterans Association in Union Grove, WI. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI and Theresa 'Madam Wee Wee' Kempfer. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 30th at 11:30 a.m. at Polnasek Daniels Funeral Home. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at the Southern Wisconsin Memorial Veteran's Cemetery.
