Funeral services for Mrs. Verna Lee Duke, 81, of Bald Hill, will be held Monday, November 23, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the Homer United Pentecostal Church with Reverend Ronnie Frankens and Reverend Emory Quarles officiating. Interment will follow in the Fielder Cemetery. Mrs. Duke was born November 7, 1928 in Marshall, Texas to the late Edith (Hart) and Herbert Miller. She died Thursday, November 19, 2009 in a Huntington nursing facility. Mrs. Duke had resided in the local area since childhood. She worked as a medical aide at the Lufkin State School for more than 14 years. Mrs. Duke was a charter member of the Homer United Pentecostal Church. Her love was to reach out and help people. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Dan and Marsha Luce Duke of Sheridan, Arkansas, and Mike and Judith ''Lori'' Duke of Lufkin; grandchildren, Shawnia Volner, Billy Dan Duke, Jr. and wife Sheffner, Travis Wayne Duke and Cheyenne Duke; great grandchildren, Tyler Volner, Hunter Volner, Kilynn Duke and Gunner Duke; sister, Evelyn Rye of Lufkin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Duke was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy George Duke; son, Herbert Redrick ''Ricky'' Duke; and two brothers and one sister. Memorial contributions may be made to the Homer United Pentecostal Church, 5319 FM 326, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
