Edgar Wareing Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 1, 2014.
Edgar C. Wareing (AKA Ed, Mr. Ed, and last but not least, Hi Guy, to his grand kids), age 93, of Lufkin, died May 24, 2014. Ed, the fifth son of Edgar Thomas Wareing and Hattie Bird McCammon Wareing was born in Corsicana, Texas on November 4, 1920. Raised on a farm outside Corsicana, Ed grew up during the depression and became a "jack of all trades". He worked on the farm, did repairs on rent houses owned by his dad and also worked at the local mortuary. Through a scholarship and job at the Corps of Cadets Mess Hall, he was able to continue his education at Texas A&M University in 1939 where he studied mechanical engineering. Upon completion of ROTC training, Ed and his classmates left A&M and reported for active duty. While stationed in Fort Belvoir, Va. for a three month engineer training school, Ed called his hometown sweetheart Betty Jo Owen and proposed. In August he was transferred to Fort Devin, Mass., where he awaited Betty to join him. Following her arrival, they were married on the evening of October 8, 1943 at the base chapel. Soon afterward Ed was deployed to the Pacific Front where he proudly served until the end of the war in the Corps of Engineers. Following his discharge from the Army in April of 1946, he and Betty moved to College Station where Ed switched majors and earned his degree in Industrial Engineering. In January of 1948 Ed accepted a job offer from Texas Foundries. He and Betty packed up and moved to Lufkin. During his years with TF, Ed moved from the Industrial Engineering Department to plant maintenance where he became the Plant Engineer and was responsible for all maintenance and construction projects at the foundry. Ed was a long time member of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry, was Jr. Warden, a Lay Eucharistic Minister, and a delegate for many years to the annual council of the Diocese of Texas. He also served his community as a member of the Angelina County Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, the Planning and Zoning Commission for Lufkin and he several terms on the Lufkin City Council. Ed was also very active for many years in the Rotary club. Following his retirement from TF, he served for many years as a volunteer at CISC and was instrumental in several facility upgrades. Ed is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-laws Robert and Pat Wareing of Friendswood and Fred and Addie Wareing of Lufkin; plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nelda Wareing Bate and the love of his life, Betty (AKA Betty Jo or Momma Jo), who died in 2007. We will miss you, Hi Guy; may you rest in peace. A memorial service celebrating Ed's life will be held at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, 919 S. John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, Texas, on Monday, June 9 at 11 a.m. The family extends special thanks to the staff of Hospice in the Pines and the Pinecrest Health Care unit for their care and support of Ed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, 919 S. John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, TX 75904.

To the family of Mr. Wareing,
I am so for your your loss. I had a chance to get to know Ed while he was at PC; through serving him. He was such a sweet person, very kind-hearted! He always had smile of his face and greeted everyone he came in contact with. I'm sure that he will be missed by all that knew him. He was a rare gift that this world needed to be touched by. Prayers for your family.
