Helen Cannon Obituary

HELEN CANNON Helen C. Cannon, of Las Vegas, passed away Dec. 25, 2009, in Parowan, Utah. She was born May 16, 1916, in Cameron, Wis., to Helena Reich Case and Walter Case. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Helen taught school and financially helped her sisters complete their education and saved the rest for flying lessons. To get more flying time, she went to work at an airport in Huron, S.D., as the chief mechanic's right-hand dope applier. In 1944, she joined the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP). Helen was stationed at Luke Field, Ariz., where she met her husband, Robert O. "Bob" Cannon Jr. She was a test pilot for the AT-6s and ferried PT 17s. After the WASP disbanded, she taught flying at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. She and Bob were married in Los Angeles in 1946 and moved to Las Vegas where Bob resumed his career in the hotel industry. A resident of Las Vegas for 63 years, Helen became involved in community and volunteer work. She was past president of Junior League, an active member of United Fund, Family Counseling Agency, past council safety chairman for the P.T.A., and a former member of Valley Hospital Board of Governors. In 1961, she flew in the Powder Puff Derby, a coast-to-coast women's air race. She served 20 years on the Clark County School Board, holding positions of clerk, vice president and president. She said, "The only reason the School Board exists is to serve the children." She was past president of the Nevada State School Board Association, inducted into the Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Activities Hall of Fame, past member of the Nevada Educational Communications Commission, an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and an adult literacy tutor. Helen taught swimming lessons for the Red Cross, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1976, the Helen C. Cannon Middle School was dedicated in her honor. She was active at the school, enjoyed their concerts and once taught a course in principles of flight to students there. She was a dedicated golfer; winning many tournaments and was Southern Nevada Women's Golf champion and Nevada State Women's Golf champion. She was the first president of the Nevada State Women's Golf Association. In 2004, the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame inducted her as a member. Helen was an avid woodworker, and even made her own bows and arrows when she was a camp counselor during and after college. She enjoyed the company and the mind stimulation of playing bridge. She was a member of the Methodist Church and taught Sunday school. When she was in Parowan, Utah, recently, she cherished her continued Bible study with the late Rev. Douglas A. Harrell and Rev. Jeri Lee Harrell. Her greatest joy has been her grandchildren. Her husband, Robert O. "Bob" Cannon Jr.; parents; brother; and four sisters preceded her in death. Helen is survived by her son, Dr. Robert Cannon III; beloved daughter-in-law, Carol Cannon; daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Michael Kennedy; grandchildren, Capt. Sabrine Kennedy, USAF, Tirza Cannon, LTJG Peter Kennedy, USN, Kiara Cannon, Josephine Kennedy, Sara Kennedy and Mariah Cannon; numerous nieces and nephews; goddaughter, Nancy Nickerson; and special friend, Diane "Lady Di" Boles. A celebration of life service will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 30, at Advent United Methodist Church, 3460 N. Rancho Drive, Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the WASP Endowment Fund, Texas Women's University Library, P.O. Box 425528, Denton, TX 76204-5528, or to the National WASP WWII Museum, P.O. Box 456, Sweetwater, TX 79556, at waspmuseum.org.

I would like to thank the person who wrote such a detailed obituary for my Godmother Helen Cannon. She was very good to me in many ways. The summer after my Mother's death in November of 1966 Helen took me to stay with her and her family in Las Vegas. She taught me how to swim in the pool in the backyard. We would go out to the "hotel" (The Tropicana) for dinner often. I shared Cousin Alice's room with her. Helen Cannon took on a child that had just lost their Mother. That is a very difficult job to do. Aunt Helen was wonderful to me then and has as been all of my life. I am very proud to tell you that I truly had a very exordinary person in my life.

Our world is a better place because of women like Helen who served her country in the Women Air Force Service Piolots in WWII. She was one of the brave 1078 who were the first women to fly military planes in the United States. God Bless and Blue Skies forever.

To the family of Helen Cannon, a remarkable woman in every way, please accept my heart felt condolences. Our friendship began over the cause of Nevada's wild horses that were then and are still being eliminated in favor of cattle. Her monster pickup truck was a fitting symbol of her character . . . indestructable. She had gone missing over the many months I called and passed the house. She is now leading the "troops" in a very special place.
