Patrick Murphy Obituary

PATRICK MURPHY Sept. 9, 2010, prominent attorney, golfer, motorcyclist and fisherman, Patrick James Murphy, concluded his grand tour through the ancient and modern wonders of this world, passing away during a fishing and golfing trip in San Jose, Costa Rica. He was just days short of his 57th birthday. A skilled and respected trial attorney, Pat served as president of the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association, and was not only admitted to the Nevada State Bar, but was also a member of the bars of the U.S. District Court for the State of Nevada, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. A summa cum laude graduate of the Northern Michigan University with a bachelor of science in education, Pat Murphy obtained his juris doctorate from the Seattle University School of Law in 1980 and moved to Las Vegas, where he practiced law for the next 30 years. To spend further time discussing his courtroom prowess would be to diminish the extraordinary nature of this man. His true greatness lay in his ability to enjoy his life and to entertain his friends. A former Jack Pine Enduro trophy winner, Mr. Murphy owned, rode and raced a countless number of vintage and modern motorbikes, taking great pains to grievously injure himself and, on a number of occasions, to break many of the major bones in his body. Pat was a Honda factory-certified two-stroke mechanic. An avid fisherman, Mr. Murphy belonged to formal and informal fly-fishing clubs in Nevada and elsewhere. He also enjoyed deep-sea fishing in the Caribbean, the Pacific northwest, and the Gulf of Mexico. Pat was easily identifiable with his beaten-up canvas Safari hat, his fish-finding sunglasses, and his flask of Jameson Irish Whiskey or his beloved Basil Hayden Bourbon. To say that Mr. Murphy loved his golf is like saying that a bear loves its honey. He was not just a member of the Las Vegas Country Club and Spanish Trails, but managed to obtain an associate membership of St. Andrews in Scotland. A self-proclaimed "scratch" golfer, Pat's divots may still be found in courses from Maine to California, and a seven-iron is still to be seen half-buried at the eighth hole of the Country Club. He is remembered on courses from Greece to Australia. Pat is survived by his parents, Ralph and Jayleane Murphy; brother, Michael (Janine); and nephew, Sean Patrick Murphy. Memorial "wake" in remembrance of Mr. Murphy will be 5:30-8 p.m. this Thursday, Sept. 16, in the ballroom located on the second floor of the California Hotel and Casino. In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. Murphy's fondest wish that his friends send each other copies of the 1952 John Ford film, "The Quiet Man," starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald.

Whoa... so sad to learn all these years later that Pat is gone. A mutual friend and I from our NMU college days have just reunited and were reminiscing about those days and Pat's name came up. When we googled around and found this we were kind of stunned. The last time I talked with Pat was in the late 90's. He loaned me his Honda Goldwing for a weekend back in probably '77 or so to travel from Marquette to Petoskey to visit my folks. His larger than life personality, generosity and humor was always a beloved addition to our group gatherings. His ambition to become a lawyer was obviously achieved in grand fashion. We had some epic fishing outings that helped drive our passion for that sport for us all. Rest in peace Patrick.

Not a day goes by that I don't remember some golf course adventure or laughing and trying to stay at least a little close to the speed limit while riding our motorcycles on a back desert road or being entranced with some story about his youth on the 'UP' of Michigan. I really, truly love you, Pat. And it breaks my heart that I can't pick up the phone and ask to go out and ride to Red Rock or play 9 holes at Canyon Gate before it gets too dark. What a friend. What a wonderful, caring, big-hearted guy. What a great husband. In all, what a truly great man. You left too soon, my friend. Way too soon. But I love you all the same and you'll never be forgotten, brother.

I can picture my first meeting with the Murph back in the Spring of 1981 with his big smile and outstretched hand. You couldnt help but know you would like him. Ran with Pat plenty in those early days in Vegas playing golf and hangingout at the Las Vegas Athletic Club. He was light on his feet for a chubby guy and played a mean game of racket ball. Will miss you Pat

Pat-words cannot begin to describe the pain I feel at losing you. You started out my boss and became like a father to me. I felt at peace knowing you were always there--for advice, to lean on, for a good joke or two. You were like a father to me. I can only imagine the pain others are feeling since they can no longer see your beautiful blue eyes, hear your wonderful laugh or just bask in the presence of your greatness. You will go down in the books as one of the most generous, kind, honest, loyal men there are. I love you Pat.

We will all miss his great joy of life, his wit, his sense of humor. A terric Mediator and a terrific teacher to work with on our joint Panels! Those eyes were always twinkling with Irish laughter. May God light a candle, Pat, to guide you home, and may Saint Peter have a bottle of Irish Whiskey and three glasses, one for you, one for St.Peter and one for all of your friends to offer you a toast.BILL TURNER

Pat- you were an extraordinary man, gone far too soon. Your friendship taught me about life, inegrity, compassion, the value of a fine Kentucky bourbon and so much more. Dave and I treasured you and will always honor your memory. There is no explanation that takes away the pain of your loss. Except maybe they needed an Irish, motorbike riding golfer to round out an exceptional foursome in heaven.

Pat, you are missed dearly my friend by all those that have known you. You were probably the most generous man I've ever known. To this day, you never let me pay for a single round of golf, and we had some great matches over the years. Always the comedian, I'll never forget the look on the waiter's eyes when you ordered with a straight face, "let me have the fish heads on rice", and we both laughed as he fumbled through the menu trying to find it. I wish I could be there on Thursday night to share some Pat Murphy stories with your many friends, but the miles will keep me away. Oh, what I would do for one last hug. Rest in peace my friend.

Our hearts have been touched once again by Mr. & the former Mrs. Patrick Murphy. These are of the most treasured of friends. We have been long time dear friends and neighbors for over a decade. Pat (known to many as Santa) & Nancy Murphy (known as Mrs. Santa) spent their every Christmas holiday generously giving and spreading love & good cheer to children of all ages! We will forever love them and though Pat is with his maker now, the memories can never leave our family. May this incredible attorney and friend to many rest in peace. I am forever grateful for you holding my hand during many of Tiffany's highs and lows. The three things I could always count on: 1) your straight forwardness; 2) your incredible sense of humor; and 3) your tenacity. Thank you for hanging in there with Tiffany and I for the last three and a half years. I'm sure there are a few folks up there who can use a good attorney at the pearly gates! I'll probably need someone up "there" to get me out off the hood with God. God bless your family and friends who are mourning your passing. I'm excited to know you lived a rich life.

Pat Murphy: Yes the smiling Irishman, there are countless stories that will live on. Few people embrace life and live that big and vibrant. His energy and smile woke up a room and will be longed remembered. Pat had a radar that could sense everything around him and a curiosity that drove him. One my foundest memories; is a St. Patrict's day party. St. Paties at Pat's and Nancy's. He had the Quite Man with John Wayne. And playing loudly on the DVD. Guest were everywhere, Nancy and his dearest friends were laughing as he screamed thru the house: FIGHT SCENE, FIGHT SCENE,: everybody come on. FIGHT SCENE. All of us who were mingling went running to the great room at Hight Sail, to watch John Wayne, the strong swaggering Irish Man definding his honor and fighting for his truth. Pat lived 3 lives in one. May the wind wistle, the clouds move and the sun shine on his spirit. He tounched many people, he will not be forgoten in my world. Thanks Pat, Vickey England
