Mr. Richard Robert Schmidt

Richard Robert Schmidt, age 91, of Chesterfield, Michigan, passed with much love to the Lord on April 16, 2013. Mr. Schmidt was the beloved husband of the late Helen (Fiolek) for 65 years, and the eldest of five sons of John and Elizabeth (Biezinski). He was the loving father of Jacqueline (Joseph) Drouin, Richard M. (Diane) Schmidt, John (Anne) Schmidt, Kenneth (Linda) Schmidt, Elise Schmidt, and Roberta Schmidt. He was the dearest grandfather of eight and great-grandfather and playmate of seven. As a youth he enjoyed baseball and boxing (1939 CYO Golden Gloves Champion). Following graduation from Cass Technical High School, he became a master electrician. During World War II, he was an Army Master Technical Sargent, receiving numerous awards for valor including the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. In peacetime, he became an automotive plant manager responsible for machine repair. Mr. Schmidt enjoyed coaching baseball, camping, fishing, and traveling. He was also a championship bowler, an avid golfer, an accomplished ballroom dancer and a loyal fan at his grandchildren's athletic and performance events. Mr. Schmidt will be deeply missed for his quiet wisdom, his satirical wit, his integrity, his faith, and the enduring support and wonder he brought to the lives of his family and friends. Visiting hours at Will and Schwarzkoff Funeral Home, 233 Northbound Gratiot, Mount Clemens will be on Sunday 3-9 p.m., April 21, 2013 with a rosary at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. (instate 10 a.m.) on Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 50931 Maria, New Baltimore. Burial is on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. sharp at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. Share memories at:
