Charles J. Schena Ret. Major Obituary
Ret. Major Charles J. Schena, age 99, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2012 at the Arden Courts Alzheimer's Assisted Living, Sterling Heights. Charles was the loving husband of the late Rosemarie Schena. Dearest father of Dr. Charles Josef Schena, and father-in-law of Frances. Charles was born April 25, 1913 in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Charlestown in the shadow of Bunker Hill Monument. Charles served in the Massachusetts National Guard before entering the U.S. Army, and he was a veteran of World War II and Korea. During World War II, he fought at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. After military service, he served and retired as a federal employee of the U.S. Tank Automotive Command, Warren. He loved to play golf, frequented Selfridge Air National Guard Base Golf Course, and organized many golf outings for retired and active military personnel. He was also an avid poet and enjoyed a competitive game of bridge. Visitation Monday, 3-9 p.m. with a 7:45 p.m. Scripture service at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc., 36900 Schoenherr at Metro Parkway (16 Mile). Funeral Tuesday, instate 10 a.m. at St. Edmund Church, 14025 12 Mile (between Schoenherr and Hayes) until time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Leader Dogs for the Blind.
