Sophie Elizabeth McGloin Obituary
Sophie Elizabeth McGloin, age 90, died April 24, 2012. Former Vice President of the Michigan Federation of Teachers. Former Vice President of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, serving on their Negotiating Team, Executive Board, Editorial Board, the Women's Rights Committee, and held positions as Co-Chairperson, Building Representative, Political Action Chairperson, and Classroom Management. Recipient of the Martin Luther King Award & Education Fund. Executive Board member of the AFL-CIO, and Delegate to their Labor Council. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of more than 60 years, Eddie. He was distinguished as a retired teacher and counselor; World War II Army Air Corps veteran; past-President of the Detroit Federation of Teachers; former Executive Assistant to Senator Phil Hart; former Special Director of Personnel for the U.S. Postal Service; and former Director of HUD. He also served as Campaign Manager to former Congressman Lucien Nedzi and Governor G. Mennen ("Soapy") Williams. She is survived by nieces and nephews; Ron and Julia Michals, Jackie and Bill Constantine, Elaine Kaminsky, 12 great-nieces and nephews, 24 great-great nieces and nephews, and many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Detroit Federation of Teachers Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2875 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48202. Visitation Friday 3-9 p.m. at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Road) in Warren. Instate Saturday 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Center Line.
