Walter S. Benton Obituary
Walter S. Benton, age 78, died on November 2, 2012. Beloved husband of Sherryl and former husband of Ellen Benton. Dear father of Walter Reed (Coreen) Benton, Larry (Pam) Benton, Sharon Morris and Richard (Sheila) Benton. Dear stepfather of Lorelle (Guy) Meadows and Andrew (Sarah Clarkson) Pflaum. Loving grandfather of 14 and cherished great-grandfather of four. Dear brother of Larry (Eileen) Benton of New York and Richard (Vicki) Benton of Kentucky. Walter attended Olivet College where he received his B.A. degree in education and played varsity football. He went on to play semi-professional football with the Melvindale Redskins and the Pontiac Arrows. He taught in Warren Consolidated Schools from 1959-1971 and was president of the Warren Education Association.In 1971,he joined the Michigan Education Association; where he served in Port Huron, Petoskey, Washtenaw and Monroe Counties as well as Local I in Macomb county. Walter was elected president of the United Staff Organization at the Michigan Education Association Headquarters and received the Friend of Public Education Award in 2000. Walter was an avid sports fan, especially the Detroit Lions and Tigers. And most of all, he enjoyed spending time surrounded by his family. All who were touched by his gift for kindness and generosity will miss him greatly. Family will receive friends Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. until time of Funeral service Noon at First Baptist Church of Birmingham, 300 Willits, Birmingham.
