Roy Mixon Obituary

Rev. Roy Darvin Mixon
April 6, 1922 - September 24, 2013
Macon , GA- Rev. Roy Darvin Mixon, age 91 passed away on Tuesday morning, September 24, 2013 at Pine Pointe Hospice Center.
Roy was born in Metter GA, the son of Charles F. Mixon and Dorothea Victoria Mincey Mixon, on the evening of April 6, 1922. He grew up in the small towns of Millen and Portal GA where he built his first church at the age of eleven with scrap wood from his father's carpentry business. Roy was the resident pastor always sharing the Bible stories he had read so many times from his favorite book, Story Book of the Bible. He held his weekly service on Saturday evening and then the family attended the local Baptist Church on Sunday. His brother, Cyril, served as deacon and received the offering which often consisted of nickels, dimes and pennies, washers, and once even a toad frog.
At age nineteen, Roy received his greetings from President Roosevelt and boarded a bus traveling to Fort McPherson in Atlanta where he was inducted into the US Army. He served his country well in WWII in the 129th AAA Anticraft Artillery Gun Battalion in the European Theater of Operations. He received commendations from General Patton, Col E. F. Adams, Major M.S. Eddy, and Lt. Col. R.W. Hartman. He also received instruction under Albert Einstein while training in Texas.
After returning home from serving his country, Roy received his second and most important call to service. He answered the call to the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ in 1948. He served as evangelist, pastor, state secretary and state treasurer of the Church of God of Prophecy in GA for many years. Roy pastored churches in GA including, Savannah, Millen, Cordele, and Canton. He also pastored in New York and New Jersey.
In 1963 Roy was appointed Overseer to the churches in Delaware and New Jersey and later to Nebraska. In 1970 he was appointed to England as national overseer. In 1974 he was appointed as mission representative to Africa, Asia, Australia and Pacific Islands and later to Europe, and Middle East. He established churches in the countries of Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Zaire, and Zimbabwe. He also served as overseer to Egypt and Sierra Leone and director of world-wide ministerial activities of the general headquarters of COGOP in Cleveland TN.
During his tenure with COGOP he penned numerous books and writings and has always been an avid reader and student, even into his nineties. Roy's library contained thousands of books. Among his favorites were books of Christian and world history and numerous Bible studies.
After 47 trips around the world, and retiring from general work with COGOP, Roy retuned to GA to pastor a small church in Valdosta for ten years. In 2000, at the age of 78, Roy married a longtime friend, the late Lorene Nutt Black Lamb Mixon. They had enjoyed more than twelve years together when Lorene was called to Heaven in February 2013. Along with his wife, Roy also acquired seven step children, seventeen step grandchildren, and twelve step great grandchildren. He also gained a foster daughter and three foster grands. He was lovingly called GranRoy.
Roy has remained in Macon with his step-son, Tom Black, and wife, Connie, since August 2012 where he has been able to enjoy being a part of the Black/Lamb family in addition to his birth family which he dearly loved.
Roy was predeceased by brothers, Cyril Mixon and Eldred Mixon of Millen GA. He is survived by one sister, Erma Gorenflo (Bill) of Columbus OH and nephews, Ron and Rick Gorenflo of OH, Calvin Mixon of Canton, GA and Chip Mixon of NC. Two nieces, Karen Holobaugh of OH and Pam Baggett of Statesboro GA. He had five great nephews, eight great nieces, four great great nephews and two great great nieces. He prayed for all his family daily.
A celebration of Roy's life and accomplishments will be held Saturday, September 28 at 1:00 pm with visitation prior at 12:00 pm at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home in WR, GA, with interment at Parkway Memorial Gardens. Pastor Leonard Pittman and Pastor Tom Black will be officiating.
To God be the glory for a life well lived for Him! The final victory has been won and this faithful soldier has made it home!

I visited the world before I ever left home as a little girl when he came & showed slides of his travels. He stayed in our home many times when my Uncle Bob & Aunt Bev were state workers in GA. Since they were my aunt & uncle, I thought he was my Uncle Roy. He was a kind and generous man & our family loved him.

What a wonderful, holy man of God. He came into our lives and his smile would light up a room, when anyone entered. He loved a good clean joke, and I shall never forget how, while evangelizing he slept in a basement, and a snake slithered under the covers and crawled out the bottom of the sheets..he proclaimed he never moved. He loved his animals. Oh, the loss to this world, when a man of wisdom, kindness, love and of high character goes to his heavenly home. Roy, we love and admire you..thanks for the opportunity to love you and for you loving us in return.

Brother Mixon was such a great blessing to me during the beginning of my ministry. I will always cherish the memory of him inviting me, when I was seventeen, to assist him in a few revivals in South GA and Florida. He was a great man of God.
