Hodges Jr., Cecil Moye - Sandersville
Cecil Moye Hodges, Jr. Sandersville, GA- Cecil Moye Hodges, Jr. of Sandersville, Georgia, died April 28, 2016 at his residence. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 11:00 am at the First Christian Church of Sandersville with interment following at Brownwood Cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The Reverend Douglas Ivey will officiate. Mr. Hodges was born March 4, 1931 in Oconee, Georgia, and was the son of the late Mattie Louise Smith Hodges and the late Cecil Moye Hodges, Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County. A graduate of Tennille High School, Mr. Hodges graduated in 1952 from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Management. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Fraternity, and the Air Force R.O.T.C. During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Hodges served as a First Lieutenant in the Air Force, and was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base. After working for several large businesses, he returned to Oconee in 1956 to join his father in the family business, Cecil Hodges Lumber Company, which was later relocated to Sandersville. He continued in the manufacture of lumber until 1981 and thentransistioned the company into Hodges Land and Timber, Inc. He served as president and CEO until his retirement, then served as chairman. Mr. Hodges was very active in organizations promoting the use of southern pine: a founding member and past president of the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association, on the executive board of the Forest Landowner's Association, and on the board of directors of the Georgia Forestry Association. He was recipient of that association's highest honor, the Wise Owl Award, in 2010. He was an active member of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association and served for a number of years on the Presidential Scholarship Committee. He was an avid supporter of Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket athletics. He also participated for numerous years in the Georgia College Business Forum and was a longtime member of the GCSU Foundation Board, being named Member Emeritus upon his retirement. Always civic minded, Mr. Hodges was a member and past president of the Sandersville Rotary Club, which honored him as Rotary Man of the Year for Washington County in 1982, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He also was a past president of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, and served a term on the Sandersville City Council and 10 years on the Washington County Hospital Authority. He was keenly interested in history, especially Georgia and Washington County history. He was an organizer and lifetime member of the Washington County Historical Society, serving as its first president. He was chairman of the Brown House Committee, serving in that capacity until the exterior of the building was stabilized, then remaining as a committee member. His last historical project was as a member of the successful commission to have the Balls Ferry Crossing of the Oconee River named as a historical state park. He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church of Sandersville where he was a member of the Men's Fellowship and served as a deacon, church treasurer, building committee chairman, and in many other capacities. Mr. Hodges loved people and had many friends. He always looked forward to the 10 o'clock coffee club, his weekly supper club, and to the fellowship at Thursday Rotary meetings. His most enduring characteristics were his sweet spirit and his quick wit, always kindly delivered with the possible exception of repartee with his UGA friends.
