I am so sorry to hear that Si has passed on. I didn't know him well except for what I Knew about his WWII exploits. Si was one of those "Greatest Generation" heroes to whom we owe so very much! A while back while I was being interviewed, I was asked about why I built my website about WWII and the Korean War. I said when you see an old man painfully walking along, maybe with a walker; his voice a little reedy and memory a little fuzzy; you just see an old man. I don't! I see a young, virile, strong man who willingly gave up his dreams, his girl friend (if, indeed, he was old enough to have one), his plans and his home. He, as nothing more than a teenager, stood toe to toe with the mightiest war machine ever devised in Europe or the cruelest most vicious and tenacious in the Pacific -- AND WON.

When the war was over, he and his friends set about turning a strong but fairly poor country, barely out of the depression, into the USA we know today. There was no whining or complaining -- they wouldn't even talk about it for many years. They were too busy catching up -- and catch up they did! They passed the entire world.

We can learn so much from people like Si! We are losing that generation so fast and it is a loss to all of us. He was a hellava guy! I know because of what he did, you know so much more. I'm sure he would want you to remember what he did and how he lived not that he is no longer with you. I am convinced that he is in a better place and still looking after you and the rest of his family.

May the powerful words recorded in the Bible at Matthew 5:4 encourage and strengthen your saddened heart.

Jim, Jennifer, Barbara: I am so very sorry to hear of Si's passing. I've thought of "Mama Si" and "Papa Si" often through the years, always with deep affection and the fondest of memories for two of the best people I ever knew. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
