Cordele, Georgia- Rooney L. Bowen Jr, of Cordele, Georgia died Thursday, March 3, 2016 at his residence. Born in Dooly County, he was the son of the late Jewell Joiner Bowen and Rooney L. Bowen Sr. He was a member of the Cordele First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his children, a son, Rooney Bowen III (Allison) of Vienna, and a daughter, Judy B. Carter (Trav) of Atlanta; a sister, Frances B. Worrall of Perry; and five grandchildren, Neeley Harmon, Haydon Davis, Ben Carter, Chandler Bowen and Elizabeth Carter. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at Cordele First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Walnut Cemetery in Unadilla, Georgia. The family will receive friends at Rainey Family Funeral Services in Cordele Friday, March 4 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Mr. Bowen was a long time businessman and President of Rooney Bowen Chevrolet of Vienna and Cordele for 49 years. He was also a long-term member of the Georgia General Assembly, serving in the Georgia House of Representatives for 10 years and the Georgia State Senate for 22 years. He always considered his highest award in the Georgia State Senate as being honored The Outstanding Legislator of the Year from the Association of Mentally Disabled Citizens. Because of his dedication and support of the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Home, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Home at P.O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, GA 30281 or online at georgiasheriffsyouth.org. Rainey Family Funeral Services of Cordele has charge of the arrangements.
