Carey Tate Rutland
January 15, 1920 - March 24, 2014
Macon, GA- Carey Tate Rutland, age 94, long-time resident of Macon, GA and active volunteer in the community, died peacefully on March 24, 2014. Mr. Rutland was born January 15, 1920 in Bartow County, GA. He graduated from Georgia State University and worked for the Railroad Retirement Board and Social Security. During his years with the federal government, Mr. Rutland organized and served as president of the Macon chapter of AFGE, the labor union for federal workers. In his retirement, Mr. Rutland traveled extensively, volunteered with the Outreach Ministry of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, served as a librarian at the Bibb County Jail, and actively participated in the Fellowship of Reconciliation. He was an avid chef, gardener, and volunteer in the community. He was a longtime member of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church and the Solomon Fellowship Class.
Mr. Rutland was preceded in death by his parents, Blake and Lona Rutland; eight brothers Clarence, Carl, Leslie, Herman, Frank, Paul, and Archie Rutland; four sisters Bessie Lee Holt, Sue Morris, Kate Davidson (his twin), and Mae Smith.
Mr. Rutland leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Dr. Lolita Garcia Rutland; children David Rutland, Dr. Maria Rutland, and Dr. Jonathan Rutland; granddaughters Meghan and Rachel Price; brothers-in-law Frank Garcia and Marion Smith; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family; special friend Harold Downs and Noo Benbry; and countless friends and neighbors.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 2:30 PM in the Chapel of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 1 PM the church. Interment will be at Cassville Cemetery, Bartow County, GA Friday, March 28, 2014 at 12 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Outreach Ministry of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church or to Mulberry Street United Methodist Church General Fund.
