Perry, GA- Doris Council Hulbert, 91, passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2014. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Perry. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the service. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 12, 2014, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Perry, 1105 Main Street, Perry, GA 31069, or to the donor's favorite charity.
Mrs. Hulbert was born in Wilkinson County to the late Wilbur Lofton Council and Eva Bloodworth Council. A graduate of Georgia College, she attended Mercer University and University of Georgia. For several years, she taught First Grade in Houston County, but was reprimanded by the Board of Education for teaching The Hokey Pokey to her first-graders. Earlier in life, Mrs. Hulbert enjoyed playing tennis. She was an accomplished bridge player, and played with various bridge groups in Perry. Through the years, Mrs. Hulbert traveled extensively, which she so enjoyed, in Europe, Africa, Canada, and Mexico. An avid golfer, she was a founding member of Houston Lake Country Club's Ladies Golf Association. Integrating two of her favorite pastimes, she took golfing trips to Eleuthra, Puerto Plata, West End, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. A long-time member of First Baptist Church of Perry, Mrs. Hulbert was a member of the Jewel Teresi Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the General Daniel Stewart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Her greatest treasure in life was her family, who will miss her dearly. Mrs. Hulbert was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, David P. Hulbert, Sr.; a son, William Lofton Hulbert; and a great-grandson, Stephen Michael Shimp.
Left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Hulbert are her son, David P. "Skeet" Hulbert, Jr. (Jane) of Perry; her grandchildren, Jodi Hulbert Zammit (Edmund) of Perry, David Paul Hulbert, III (Lisa) of Charlotte, NC, John Walker Hulbert (Ashley) of Perry, Michael Benjamin Hulbert (Samantha) of Perry, Matthew Council Hulbert (Jennifer) of Perry, Mark Walker Hulbert (Emily) of Smyrna, and Jill Hulbert Thigpen (Eric) of Perry; 16 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Winifred Council Mitchell of Milledgeville.
