Rev. Dr. Marshell Stenson Jr. passed from labor to reward on the morning of December 19, 2013. He was born on May 3, 1936 as the fifth of thirteen children to Rev. and Mrs. Marshell Stenson. He grew up in Troup County, Georgia. He graduated from Troup County High School with honors. He attended Clark College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later attended the Interdenominational Seminary (ITC) where he was awarded both a Bachelor and a Master of Divinity degree. He went on to receive his Doctor of Divinity degree from Carver Bible College.
Rev. Stenson devoted his life in service to the Lord. He served first as Pastor of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Newnan, GA. He was later called to serve as the Pastor of First Baptist Church in Macon, GA. In this capacity, Rev. Stenson became a chief ombudsman for the Civil Rights Movement, hosting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights workers as they moved through the Central Georgia area. Rev. Stenson also served as the President of Bryant's Theological Seminary from 1969 until 2004.
In 1969, Rev. Stenson was called to pastor St. Luke Baptist Church. He continued as the steadfast leader of this church for the past 44 years.
Reverend Stenson was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Marshell and Matlida Stenson; siblings: Virgina Fluellen, Johnny Clarence Stenson, James Stenson, Lillian Stenson, Nathan Stenson, William Stenson and David Stenson, and his son, Timothy Stenson.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Dr. Mary Banks Stenson and their 3 children Marshell (Linda) Stenson, Mary (Lanse) Scriven, Joel (Kartika) Stenson; nine grandchildren, Christopher Dials, Marshell Stenson V, Terrence Stenson, Tyler Scriven, Jessica Scriven, Sarah Scriven, Charles Scriven, Lauren Stenson, and Jordan Stenson; his siblings Howard (Racine) Stenson, Ethel Stargill, Matilda "Shirley" (John) Rouse, Dorothy (Walter) Stephens, Michael (Dorothy) Stenson; sisters and brothers in law; Howard Fluellen, Cora Stenson, Hubert Banks, Cora Mae Banks, Lucille Chandler and a host of neices and nephews and great neices and nephews.
The homegoing celebration of Rev. Dr. Marshell Stenson will be held Saturday, December 21, 2013 at St. Luke Baptist Church, 1180 Haywood Rd. Macon, GA. 31211 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 20, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Hutchings Funeral Home, 536 New Street, Macon, GA. 31201.
