Macon, GA- John J. Berkner, 73, of Briarwood Circle, died Monday, February 17, 2014, in a local hospital. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00pm, Wednesday at Bridges Funeral Home in Gray. A memorial service will be held at 5:00pm, Thursday, February 20, 2014, at the residence of Mr. Jay Berkner at 178 Wheehaw Road in Macon.
Mr. Berkner was born in Macon on December 01, 1940, and had lived here his entire life. He was the son of the late Alvin Alton Berkner and Mary Lucile Bass Berkner. Upon completing his education, Mr. Berkner enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served with honor. In his civilian life, he retired as an operator from Southern Natural Gas. Mr. Berkner was of the Baptist faith and loved baseball, sharing his love of the game with many Middle Georgia youth as a coach.
Mr. Berkner is survived by his devoted wife of forty-seven years: Elizabeth S. Berkner; sons and daughter-in-law: Jay Berkner, John A. and Aretha Berkner and Robert Berkner; and by his grandchildren: Cody Berkner, Nathan Berkner, Staci Berkner and Aubri Lawler.
