Victor Eugene "Doc" Humm, DVM, 90, of Plain City, Ohio, born in scenic Mohican Valley northeast of Loudonville on a large dairy farm on Aug. 16, 1922 and passed away Saturday morning, May 18, 2013.
Doc graduated from Jeromesville High School, attended Ashland University for two years and then served in the Army
for 3 1/2 years in World War II
. Upon discharge from the Armed Forces he returned to Ashland University to graduate in 1948 with Science and Music degrees. He then moved to Columbus, Ohio where he entered The Ohio State University
College of Veterinary Medicine.
Upon graduation in 1952 he and his family moved to Plain City, Ohio where he began a veterinary practice. He did mostly large animal work on farms in Union, Madison and Franklin counties. Doc was the Fair Veterinarian of the Plain City Fair for 20 years, active in veterinary education programs at OSU and a veterinarian at the State level. He served as a Veterinary Supervisor of the Ohio Department of Agriculture for 20 years in Franklin, Union, Madison, Champaign and Clark counties and served one racing season as Track Veterinarian at the Franklin County Race Track in Hilliard.
He was a member of the American Legion, Methodist Church and an active member of the Central Ohio Music Society (COHJS) in Columbus, Ohio. He was a lifetime member of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association. Doc retired in 1998. His hobbies included traveling and musical activities within the state. He was also a long time member of the Ohio Historical Society, enjoyed Ohio History, and learned the state of Ohio's 88 counties, their county seats and how they received their names.
Preceded in death by parents, Guy and Pearl (Snyder) Humm; wife, Dorcas Marie (DeLozier) Humm in 2004; brothers, M. L. Humm and John Humm; sister, Naomi Blodgett.
He will be greatly missed by his sister, Miriam (Dick) Geib; loving children, Charles Humm, Larry (Karen) Humm, Denise Kasper, and David (Mareda) Humm; three grandchildren, Wendy (Zak) Hill, Jessica (James) French, Dustin (Dana) Humm; six great-grandchildren, Noah, Madison, Mackenzie, Elaine, Kendall and Kalla.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 202 E. Main St. (state Route 161 W.), Plain City. Private family burial will be held at a later date.
