William "Bill" Hanusik, 79, of Springfield, died 3:35 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at the Springfield Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 1, 1933, at Grand Ridge, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Edna (Fenton) Hanusik.
He moved to Ohio from Illinois in 1958 as a DSM for an Indiana based Seed Company.
He and his wife Marilyn formed Madison Seed Co. in 1968 and along with their son, Joe, built it into one of the premier seed companies in Ohio.
Bill was very active in St. Patrick Church in London as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Past Chairman of the School Board, Past Chairman of the Finance Committee and Parish Council. He was a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 1786.
He loved children and sports, coaching Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion Baseball.
He was the "voice" of the Madison South Football team for 14 years as well as being active in the Booster Club and Young Farmers Organization. His company sponsored a Babe Ruth Baseball League and their own company Softball Team, winning 69 games on their way to the State Championship in 1987.
Also active in Business Related Organizations. Prior to retirement, he served on the OSIA Planning Committee, Area Advisory Board, Certification Board, OSIARF Board of Directors and the Gwynne Conservation Area Advisory Committee.
He was honored as Ohio Seedsman of the Year in 1993 and was inducted into the Ohio Farm Science Review Hall of Fame in 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Carol (Arthur) Hanusik; children, Deborah (Steve) Freisthler, Jean Adrian, Joe (Terry) Hanusik; stepchildren, Rebecca (Kendall) Krieg, Deborah (Moises) Hernandez and Kevin (Janice) Welsheimer; grandchildren include, Eric and Lori (Jeff) Overhaug, Lisa (Brian) Ingles, Nicholas and Julie (Ben) Anderson, Aaron, Seth and Spencer Hanusik; step-grandchildren, Kristin and Melissa Krieg, Emily and Natalie Hernandez, Philip and Kate Welsheimer; great-grandchildren, Austin, Alexa and Rylan and Christian Ingles, Dax Anderson and Kevin Overhaug.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn (Pitstick) Hanusik on April 24, 1996; his parents, Joseph and Edna Hanusik; and sisters, Grace Trench and Mary Sengenberger.
The family invites friends to call at St. Patrick Parish Center from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14. A Rosary will be held at 3:30 p.m., prior to the viewing. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at St. Patrick Church. Father Mark Ghiloni will be officiating. Interment will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Bill requested memorial contributions be made to the St. Patrick School Building Fund or James Cancer Center. Envelopes will be available at the Parish Center.
