WEST JEFFERSON — Richard David "Dick" Hockenbery, 88, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013.

Dick was born on Oct. 30, 1925 in West Jefferson to the late J. Spencer and Nettie (Braithwaite) Hockenbery.

He graduated from West Jefferson High School in 1945/2001.

He served in the U.S. Army — Company D, 172nd Battalion, 87th Acorn Division, European Theater 1944-1946. POW Luxembourg, Germany, for 58 days, liberated at the Crossing of the Rhine.

Upon his return home, he went to work for his uncle at The Electric Shop in West Jefferson until his retirement in 1980. He was a Jefferson Township Volunteer Fireman for 32 years, Fire Chief from 1968-1980. He was a Life Member of Disabled American Veterans No. 93, Madison County and member of West Jefferson United Methodist Church.

Preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred (Ralph) Ray, Della (Charles) Clark, Betty (Carl) Kessler; brothers and sister-in-law, Albert (Gladys), James and Clell Hockenbery; great-grandson, Stone Michael Postle.

Survived by loving wife of 67 years, Norma-Jean (Boggs); daughters, Beverly (Skip) Hall, Becky Mahugh, Betsy Postle; son, Bob (Barb) Hockenbery; grandchildren, Shannon (Mitch) Hall-Owen, Jeremy Hall, Heather Hall, Andrew and Doug Mahugh, Melissa (Ryan) Mahugh Greer, Brian (Jill) Postle and Emma Hockenbery; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joanie, Maddie and Michael Owen, Hayden Mahugh, Austin and Brody Greer, Spencer and Jozlynn Postle; brother, Clyde (Vera) Hockenbery; sisters-in-law, Lorna (Boggs Murry) Krausher, Mary (Boggs) Sisson, Donna Hockenbery, Ruthe Martin Barker, Patricia Hockenbery; brother-in-law, D. Hugh (Angie) Boggs; many nieces, nephews, cousins.

Special thanks goes to his caregivers at Sisters on Elm and his hospice nurse and family friend, Mary Ann Ryan.

Visitation will be held at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church, 36 S. Center St., West Jefferson, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21. Funeral service will be held at West Jefferson United Methodist Church, 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013. Burial with Military and Firemen's Service to follow at Hampton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations be made to Jefferson Township Fire/Emergency Dept., 745 W. Main St., West Jefferson, OH 43162 or Loving Care Hospice, 56 S. Oak St., London, OH 43140.
