Robert E. "Bob" Oberlin, 84, a longtime resident of Marysville, died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at his home.
He retired in 1992 from O. M. Scott Company where he worked for 35 years. He was a member of the Scotts 20-Year Club.
A licensed realtor for over 40 years, he was an associate of ALT Realty Company and was a member of many realty associations on the state, national and local levels, including the Marysville Association of Realtors.
He was a member of Marysville First United Methodist Church where he served as church treasurer and usher.
A graduate of Madison Rural High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was a member of the Marysville Art League and served years ago as a Boy Scout cub master. A cartoonist, he created and published several comic books. He enjoyed drawing, painting and reading.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served following World War II in the Pacific Theater on the USS Iowa.
He was a gentleman with great intelligence. He loved to read and in his own quiet way, appreciated ongoing learning and gaining knowledge throughout his entire life. His integrity, generosity, creativity and sense of humor were his most admirable qualities.
He was born March 10, 1929 in Columbus, to the late Ralph E. and Leona Compton Oberlin and was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Viveiros.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Avanelle Bruce Oberlin, whom he married Nov. 12, 1955, at Church of Christ in Christian Union in London, Ohio; five children, John (Michelle) Oberlin of Marysville, David (Laura) Oberlin of Jamestown, Janet Oberlin of Springfield, Doris "Deb" Oberlin of Byhalia and Doug Oberlin of Marysville; three grandchildren, Wade Thomas Oberlin of Japan where he is stationed in the Navy, Sarah Eileen Oberlin a student at Columbus College of Art and Design and Joseph Lee Oberlin of Marysville; two sisters-in-law, Alice Faye Round of Huron and Donna (JE) Fugate of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; an aunt, Vivian Compton of Columbus; and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Marysville First United Methodist Church. Rev. Aaron Brown will be officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Union County Military Funeral Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at UNDERWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 703 East Fifth St., in Marysville. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
