LONDON - Annie Ruth (Sheffield) Richards, age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at her home in London, Ohio.
She was born on Dec. 4, 1924, to James and Ruth Sheffield in Jasper, Alabama. She grew up in Jasper. After high School she moved to Birmingham, Alabama where she met her husband and lifelong friend Eugene Richards. Shortly after their marriage they were offered an opportunity to manage a new Radio Station in Cullman, Alabama where they sang together on the radio and entertained many of the country stars of that time.
In 1950 a new opportunity presented itself in Detroit, Michigan for her husband Eugene in television so the beautiful "redheaded southern bell" moved north from her beloved Alabama. She enjoyed their time in the Detroit area and then later when they moved to Farmington Hills, where she taught Sunday school and also volunteered her time to the Cancer Society and election board. In the early '70s she returned to school and earned her Radio and Television Operator's License and became the first female television engineer in the Detroit area at the local Detroit PBS station. After retiring from that career she hosted a weekend radio show in Traverse City, Mich. She truly was a trailblazer for women in the field of radio and television. She was a woman of many talents and great compassion and love for people of all ages and races. During her lifetime she had many hobbies. She loved looking for and refinishing antiques and enjoyed many trips to New England to search old barns for special treasures. She also enjoyed flower arranging and following the latest makeup and fashion trends. She was a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a member of the Farmington Players, and the Farmington Women's Club. She loved acting and was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. She was witty and wise and was dearly loved by all who knew her. Our loss is heaven's gain. We know she will never be far from us as we will always carry her beautiful spirit in our hearts.
