He was born July 6, 1962, in Waterville to Ellery and Sibylle (Schmid) Thurston, and then moved to Skowhegan, where he graduated in 1981. He and his family then moved to North Muskegon, and he attended school to learn auto body repair. He was superior in his work and loved what he did.
In his spare time, he loved to restore cars, hunt, camp and especially golf.
On June 27, 1998, he married Kelly (Nash). They have two daughters, Shelby Nicole and Colby Diane, both at home.
Alex was a great father, full of love and unending patience. He was a member of Temple United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men.
He is survived by his parents, Ellery and Billy, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a brother, Steven and wife Rebecca Thurston, of Columbus, Ohio, and their daughters, Somer (Christopher) Gilbert, Exer and Acadia; mother-in-law Marjorie Nash of Fruitport; sister-in-law Kimberly Nash and Matthew Tighe, and their daughter, Trinity, of Muskegon; and his best friend and golf partner, Brian Wiggins.
The memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Temple United Methodist Church, 2500 Jefferson St., with the Rev. Robert Cook officiating. Visitation with Alex's family will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 13, at The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes Inc., 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444, 231-798-1100.

Dearest Billy, Ellery and Steven...My deepest condolences in the loss of Alexander. Even though it has been many, many years, I fondly remember playing with Steven and Alex as a child. We lived on Kennebec Street in Skowhegan and you were friends of my mom and dad (Mary and Bob). My sister, Carla, and I were just talking and remembering you all within the past few months. We've often wondered over the years where you folks may have moved to. (Believe it or not, my grandson's name is Alexander and my son's name is Alex.) I am sending many prayers and thoughts your way. To your entire family I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Please take care and know that many friends, both old and new are thinking of you.
