ROCKLAND -- Doris Louise LeGendre, 90, passed away at the Knox Center on Friday, May 13. She was born in Waterville, the first child of Joseph and Marie (Veilleux) Mailloux. She spoke only French until she started school and taught her parents and younger siblings English. She graduated from Waterville High School.
Doris married Robert Francis "Bob" LeGendre on Dec. 31, 1941, in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he was stationed in Navy flight school. She arrived there after three days on the train, having left Waterville by herself after a great family sendoff. The Navy moved them all over the country, and they had their four children in four different states. After leaving active duty, Bob graduated from Tufts Dental School and began his practice in Brunswick, where they raised their children. Unfortunately for all, Bob died unexpectedly in 1980. Doris worked early on in their marriage as a secretary, but when her children were born, she chose to stay home to raise them. Her family was very important to her and she and Bob helped each of the children through school and activities with unwavering support. Doris always encouraged her children to seek the higher education that she did not have the opportunity to attain.
Her son, Dr. Robert LeGendre Jr. and wife Karen of Warren, and daughters Barbara LeGendre and husband Robert Meade of Trumansburg, N.Y., and Jane Muszynski and husband Dr. Michael of Longwood, Fla., survive Doris. She also leaves a brother, Harold Mailloux, of Westbrook; sister Gladys Matte of Waterville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Doris was predeceased by Bob; a newborn son, Richard; her parents; and three sisters, Lorette Greaves, Dorothy Lamontagne and Yvette Dumont.
We are asking that in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing could make a donation in her name to Knox Center for Long Term Care, 6 White St., Rockland, ME 04841.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at Veilleux Funeral Home. A committal service will be held on Thursday, June 2, at 10 a.m. at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery. A service of the Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

I remember one summer my father Harold Mailloux and I, Tiffani, would go over to her house twice a week and visit. Dad would sit and talk to her while I helped her out by cleaning her house. That experience helped me decided to become a CNA and work in the home health field. I will always miss you Aunt Doris.
