Matthew Fowler Obituary

DALE CITY, Va. -- Matthew Wayre Fowler, 50, of Kirkdale Court in Dale City, Va., passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011.

He was born in Waterville, Maine, on March 7, 1960, the son of the late Floyd B. Fowler and Carol J. (Mathieu) Fowler.

He graduated from Mt. View High School in 1979.

As a child, Matthew was a Cub Scout, enjoyed playing baseball and won first place in a soap box derby. After leaving Maine, he came to Alexandria, Va. He worked briefly at many grocery stores and restaurants before moving to the Lorton-Dale City area.

Matthew worked at the Safeway in Dale City for the past five years.

He was a good worker and will be missed by his friends there. He was employed at Potomac Mills for many years before that.

Matthew enjoyed wrestling, trying to figure out the system to win the lottery, reading and writing poetry, Christmas music and announcing the daily specials over the PA system while at work in the deli at Safeway. He loved sending cards to family and friends on holidays and always won the unspoken contest to see who would send out Christmas cards first each year.

Matthew had a kind and loving spirit, and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Matthew leaves his mother, Carol Mathieu Fowler of Unity; his sisters, Lauri A. Fowler and Linda Thomas of Reston, Va., Sherri L. Lorette of South Royalton, Vt., Heidi J. and Terry Hilton of Bingham, and Jodi L. Fowler of Kansas City, Mo.; and his brother, Todd B. Fowler of Boliver, N.Y. Matthew also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Matthew resided at the home of Bertha Jones of Dale City, Va., for 25 years and was thought of as a foster son and best friend. He was like a brother to Mrs. Jones' children, Tracy Richards and Andreana Holmes, of Herndon, Va., Cheryl and Jose Martinez, of Dale City, Va., Christopher Jones of Harrisonburg, Va., Ausean and Portia Fields, Travis and Nikia Jones, Jorrell and Keisha Smith, and Valerie Smallwood. Matthew was like an uncle to their children.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., June 11 at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.
