Richard Squires Obituary

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Richard W. "Squeak" Squires, 80, of Portsmouth, N.H., died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at his home.

He was born in Madison on Aug. 16, 1930, the son of the late Alfred and Lula M. (Holoway) Squires.

After graduating from Madison High School in 1948, Richard served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a ships progressman at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was formerly a courier for Path Lab.

He was a former Cubmaster, baseball and basketball coach, and was active with sports boosters.

Survivors include his children, Tracy Ann LaPointe and her husband, Scott E. LaPointe, and Robert Franklin Squires and his wife, Robin O. Squires; four grandchildren, Darren Scott LaPointe, Connor Brent LaPointe, Emma Marie Squires and Kyle Brent Squires; sister Elizabeth Allain; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia Ann (Cunningham) Squires; and his son, Brent Richard Squires.

Visiting hours will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home -- Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brent Squires Memorial Scholarship, c/o Tracy Squires LaPointe, 18 Tamarack Drive, South Berwick, ME 03908. Dear Tracy and family,
I am so very sorry to learn of your father's death. I have fond memories of him, your mother, and his sister and brother-in-law on one of the Caribbean cruises. He was a wonderful person to know and I'm sure he was loved and respected by many.
