Steve grew up in Norridgewock, and graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1976. He starred on the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams all four years in high school. He went on to play collegiate baseball and football while at Case Western Reserve University. He graduated from Case Western in 1980 and then graduated from Case Western's School of Dentistry in 1985 as a doctor of dental surgery.
Steve returned to his home state to practice dentistry, initially in Dexter and eventually opening a second practice in Skowhegan.
Steve was a member of the Dexter Fire Department and Dexter Kiwanis. He met his wife, Debbie, in Dexter and they married in 1989. Steve and Debbie have two daughters, Jenna and Miriah.
In addition to his dental practice, Steve was an entrepreneur and started numerous businesses, all of which were targeted at serving the community in which he lived or providing products to aid people with medical conditions. Steve and his family were also avid skiers and spent considerable time at Sugarloaf Mountain during the winter months, where Jenna skis with the Sugarloaf Mountain junior professionals and Miriah snowboards with SCVA.
In addition to his immediate family, Steve is survived by his parents, William and Wilda Chapman, of Mesa, Ariz.; and four brothers and their wives, Scott and Brenda of Standish, Stanley and Lisa of Hermon, Sherwood and Laurie-Anne of Gilbert, Ariz., and Sheldon of Cardiff, Calif.
Steve enjoyed life and lived abundantly. He will be remembered as a great husband, dad, dentist, son, brother, friend and an active and involved member of the community.
While we are all saddened that we will no longer be able to enjoy being with Steve, he would not want us to spend time mourning his passing. We will honor his wishes and instead have a celebration of Steve's life with family and friends on July 3, 2011, at his residence.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve's memory at www.winterkids.org, a ski program for children.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
We are all thinking of you and if there is anything we can do please feel free to ask.

Debbie, We were shocked to hear of Steve's passing. Our thoughts are with you in your time of loss. Other than having Steve for a dentist I remember when we were at a halloween party for the kids and your little ones were scared and holding onto Steve going through the haunted house at the Taylor house. Always think of memories like that to get you to smile. Barb and Jasper.

"Debbie, Jenna, Miriah and Family, We are deeply saddened to hear of Steve's passing. There was a time in my life that you and Steve were more than close friends and mentors but more like Ma and Pa Chapman. Thanks so much for your support and guidance. Steve was a great husband, dad and friend. He shared with me (many late nights), why he worked so hard and how much you and the girls meant to him. It's so hard at a time like this to come up with the right words to say but please know that you have our deepest sympathy and you are in our deepest thoughts and prayers." While having already personally shared our sorrow with our dear friends Debbie, Jenna, and Miriah, we also send condolences to Steve's dental family, staff and patients. The incredible outpouring of help from most of the local dentists until a new dentist takes over is a testament to the respect the dental community has for Steve. Be it at a dental meeting or at The Loaf, I will miss my friend.
