Gwen Wagor Obituary

Gwen Wagor, 86
LYMAN -- Gwen Wagor, 86, of Lyman, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2011 at Southern Maine Medical Center. Born Oct. 20, 1924 in Cannock, England, she was the daughter of Susanna (Sambrook) and Reginald Walter Darby. In 1942, Gwen, 18, was drafted into the British Nursing Service serving her country until the end of the war. Married to an American soldier, she immigrated as a war bride to the US in 1945. After a 'Mexican divorce', she married the love of her life, Robert E. Wagor, the handsome local pharmacist in her home town of Fairport, N.Y. She was an intuitive and risk taking artist who created a 'Garden on Paper.' Well known as a 'wet on wet' transparent watercolorist, she began painting at 40, studying in Maine with Eliot O'Hara and Edgar Whitney. In 1975 the family moved permanently to Maine. Gwen founded two galleries, The Canal Studios in Fairport and The Somerset Gallery in Kennebunkport and loved to teach. She was an inspiration to many students at Heartwood College of Art and the Lyman Art Group. Art rule #1: A color must appear three times in varying amounts in every painting. And so it goes.
Gwen loved flowers and created an exquisite informal English Garden that towered over everyone by summer's end. She adored chocolate and roses, disliked thunder and fiddle music.
Gwen is survived by her Zen master husband of 56 years, RoberT; her children, Andrew, Susan, David and wife Peggy;, and grandchildren, Zachary, Rawley and Carson. She was loved by all and will be profoundly missed. The family wishes to thank Dr. Arthur Scott for his friendship over the past 35 years.
There will be a celebration of her life and art on May 21, 2011 at Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk, 4:00 - 7:00.

We met Gwen in 1980 when we were at the beginning of two second marriages - still going after 30 years.
We have enjoyed the two pictures we bought from Gwen and still enjoy them - every day.
A wonderful lady.
Rhoda is now painting watercolors and finds her an inspiration.
