CAPE ELIZABETH -- Helen Loretta Gagnon, 83, died at home on May 16, 2011.
She was born in Greenwich, N.Y., on Feb. 18, 1928, the fifth of Michael Benedict and Helen Loretta Bergin's 11 children. She attended local schools and graduated from Greenwich High School. She married Philip Leonard Gagnon in 1949.
The family moved from Scotia-Glenville, N.Y., to Cape Elizabeth in 1968, when General Electric opened a new plant in South Portland. Primarily a homemaker, Helen worked on a part-time basis for CVS. She was a communicant of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church.
Helen was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Philip L. Gagnon of Cape Elizabeth; a daughter, Phyllis Gagnon of Ashburn, Va., four sons, Damian and his wife Jeanne-Marie Gagnon of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., Dr. David and his wife Marcy Gagnon of Richmond, Ky., Christopher and his wife Elise Gagnon of Plymouth, Mass., Mark and his wife Carolyn Gagnon of Coos Bay, Ore.; a sister, Ann Rayfield of Schertz, Texas, two brothers, Peter Bergin of Highland, N.Y., and Michael Bergin of Scotia, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. John Reynolds and to Beacon Hospice for the care and support given to Helen and her family.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited on Saturday morning, May 28, at 10:15 a.m., at the chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 p.m. at St. Bartholomew's Church, 8 Two Lights Rd., Cape Elizabeth.
