CAPE ELIZABETH -- John A. McArdle Jr., 82, of Broad Cove Road, died peacefully on April 20, 2011, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.
John was born in Lynn, Mass., on Oct. 18, 1928, the son of John A. Sr. and Ruth York McArdle. He lived in Nahant, Mass., in his youth. He earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1950 and then his master's degree in Higher Education at Framingham State College. John also served in the United States Coast Guard from 1950-1953 stationed at Popham Beach.
John married Frances H. Terrick in Washington, Conn., in 1954, and worked for Atlantic Richfield in New England. His children, John A. III and Deborah, were born in 1955 and 1957 respectively. In 1965 John and Frances moved their family to Cape Elizabeth for a better quality of life and so that John could assume a position at St. Francis College in Biddeford where he served as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid and Dean of the Summer School until 1973. Subsequently John worked in the insurance field for Paul Revere/UNUM and was active in it until May 2010. He greatly enjoyed helping and advising his clients and was well respected and highly versed in that business.
In his spare time he enjoyed his family, Dixieland jazz and he was accomplished as a stride pianist. He was a voracious reader and with his wife he attended his children's sporting events. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and also followed and supported local sports teams including the Portland Sea Dogs and the Portland Pirates. He and his wife Frances enjoyed spending time in the British Virgin Islands on Tortolla.
John was a communicant of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Cape Elizabeth.
John was predeceased by a sister, Lois Noonan. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances; a son, John A. III and his wife Meredith Fisher McArdle of Freeport, a daughter, Deborah M. Bowker of Carrabassett Valley and her fiancee Jay Reynolds; a sister, Lillian Foley of Hyde Park, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Burial will be private. Those who wish may express their condolences at
