Mary Crawford Obituary

Mary Monica
Crawford, 49
WESTBROOK -- Mary Monica Crawford, 49, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 16, 2011.
She was born in Portland on March 29, 1962. She attended Portland schools, graduating in 1980 from Deering High School.
Mary was employed from the age of 17 at Northeast Insurance, now Tower Group, working her way up through many positions within the company.
She enjoyed her volunteer work at the Root Cellar with the Neighbors at Noon Program, the Barron Center and Spring Brook Nursing Care Center, and at the Long Creek Correctional Facility. She taught Sunday School at West Falmouth Baptist Church, was involved in church activities at the First Baptist Church in Westbrook, and recently attended Coastal Community Church in Scarborough. She also volunteered at Spring Harbor Hospital and was a strong advocate for the mentally ill; at one point testifying in Augusta to restore funding for needed programming.
Mary was most noted for her strong faith, beautiful smile and giving heart. She was one who would give the shirt off her back if she knew someone needed it. She thrived on making a difference in others lives, often supporting the 'underdog,' and was an amazing listener and friend. She loved children and was especially blessed to spend time with her beloved nieces and nephews, her family, and many lifelong friends. Her greatest desire was to follow the will of God, and she was passionate about helping others do the same.
She was predeceased by her mother, Donna Mains; and a nephew, Ryan Thiboutot. She is survived by her father and his wife, Robert and Shirley Mains of Standish; her grandparents, Ernest and Florence Mains of Westbrook; three brothers, Robert Mains and his wife Jennifer of Westbrook, Gerald Mains and Ted Mains, both of Portland; nieces, Jamie and Jessicca Mains of Denmark and Windham, nephews and nieces, Phillip, Thomas, Rachel and Jacob Crawford of Westbrook, a nephew, Chad Chase of Falmouth; her great-niece, Rainah Dennison of Denmark; and a large circle of extended family and friends who meant the world to her.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the First Baptist Church, 733 Main St., Westbrook. Online condolences may be made to www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com.

Not sure what to say?

I told Mom, and she's so sad, Mary. Mom knew something was wrong, when I said hello. You gave me this book, 'GIRLFRIEND - YOU'RE THE BEST'. On the back cover it says, 'ANGELS, GIRLFRIENDS - WHO CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE?' You gave me ANGELS. And that's how we'll remember YOU!

Some of my fondest memories are spending days at Herring Cove Beach on Campobello Island with Mary. She was loved by everyone who was privledged to know her. May she know the peace she brought to so many others...she has left this world a better place. My heart is broken as I extend my heartfelt condolences to her beloved family.

I also met Mary while working at Northeast Insurance. This is a bit shocking for someone so young. I was told by Mary my employment had ended with tears in her eyes and I knew then as I do now she was just the messenger. She was a fine person and will be missed by many. May you RIP Mary. Geralyn

Years ago when I did business development for a company downtown, I would call on Mary at her place of work and got to know her. She has lingered in my memory and just a few years ago I stopped by to see her smiling face and keep in touch. What a gift she has been to anyone who ever came in contact with her warmth, sincerity and compassion. She is a loss to so many people in so many ways. May she rest in peace. Barbara Piveronas

Mary was my Sunday school teacher when I was a younger child, I am now 15. I remember going to her house one time and she let me go into her bedroom. She told me to match the pairs of earrings that were on her bureau. There were so many and I only made about 3 pairs. I will always remember her as a calm, gentle, woman, who listened when you talked. I send my condolences. Abbey Mitchell

To Mary's family - my sincere sympathy for your loss. I met Mary through her work at NE and she worked with me to create my resume when I went looking for a new job. We had lunch over the years and I always enjoyed her wonderful sense of humor and love of people. She was a wonderful person and will be missed. She is gone way too soon from this life.

Our deepest sympathy extended to Mary's family. I met Mary when she came to visit Cheryl Sawtelle in Lubec where we played cards and board games together. Mary was a very kind person. My son, Josh, went to stay with Mary and Brad in Falmouth for about a year. Mary opened her house and welcomed him whole heartedly, we knew he was in good hands. Bless her heart, she will be not be forgotten. Terry, Charlie and Josh Rier

Dearest Mary....
How we enjoyed talking about Jesus and spending time in HIS SPIRIT! Now you are home with HIM. How awesome to run into the arms of Jesus knowing HIS love and HIS Peace! You will forever be in my heart until I see you again, when I go home to Heaven. I love you Mary! You were a wonderful lady who loved Jesus more than anything else in this world.

To the family of Mary: I was extremely shocked and saddened after picking up the newspaper today. I too, like so many of the comments listed, worked with Mary for years at Northeast Insurance. Walking in every morning and seeing that beautiful smile on her face was a great way to start the day. She was a truly selfless soul who certainly made this world a better place. Even though we had lost contact over the years, I have spoken to three friends today because of this and it just shows the positive nature of her being.

I am truly sorry for your loss and God will be waiting for Mary with open arms.

Sincerely,

Maureen (Feeney) Hebert

Mary was a wonderful friend to my grandmother, Helen Harris. As a young girl, Mary found the time to visit, run errands and swap soap opera stories. Mary remained a true friend to Mrs. Harris as she transitioned from Sagamore Village to the Baron Center. Thank you Mary for sharing such kindness. She was also a cheerful, caring and faithful friend to me. We both struggled with our illnesses and she was always the one to connect and call me over the years. Our last fun encounter was sharing lunch together just before Christmas. She talked about how much she loved her job, her church, and her wonderful friends and family. My heartfelt condolences to all who loved her. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
