Payson MacCormack Obituary

Payson Arthur
MacCormack, 80
SCARBOROUGH -- Payson Arthur MacCormack, 80, of Scarborough, passed away on May 12, 2011, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough following a brief battle with cancer. He was born on Sept. 20, 1930, the son of Charles and Agnes (Hall) MacCormack. Payson was a graduate of Westbrook High School.
After serving in the Air Force, Payson went to work for IBM where he retired after 35 years. After retirement, he worked for Lake Arrow Head in Waterboro, and Maine Medical Center in the Parking Garage where he was known for his lollipops.
Payson was active in 4-H for many years. He was President of the Middlesex County 4-H fair for 10 years.
He was well-known by the nickname Mac and could be best described as a person who was always giving of himself, a person who put the needs of others ahead of his own, a person who you could talk to and share your thoughts, a mentor of sorts, non-judgmental and always tried to find the good in it all. His family feels blessed to have had him in their lives.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Leroy MacCormack and Austin MacCormack, and a sister, Shirley (MacCormack) Briggs. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen (Tapley) MacCormack; and two daughters, Leslie (MacCormack) McLaughlin and her husband Phil of Pepperel, Mass., and Janet (MacCormack) Hyde and her husband Michael of Augusta. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Marc McLaughlin, Kelsey Hall, Jenna Hyde and Brian Hyde. There are also many nieces, nephews and some very special family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland, followed a by a light lunch.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to:

Leslie and Janet, I remember you and your father from 4H in Chelmsford, MA in the 1970's. I still live in town and wanted to let you know I am sorry for your loss.

Helen, my heart goes out to you. I've been closer to Payson than most of my brothers. I can only think of hime in glowing terms. I'm glad that you let me speak to him last week. He was as laconic and as jocular ever even in his condition. I will always love him. Bob Daniels

Helen, Leslie and Janet, I was a classmate of Payson, and very happy to know him. He was all the things his obit said he was, and everyone who knew him was glad he was part of their lives. God go with all who loved him. Those of us members of his class of '49, WHS, will not forget his friendship, and his kind ways. Frances Johnson Mains
