Roger Mitiguy Obituary

Roger Arlin
Mitiguy, 76
CUMBERLAND - Roger Arlin Mitiguy, 76 of Cumberland, and formerly of Rutland, Vt., passed away May 16, 2011 at The Cedars Skilled Care facility in Portland after a long illness. Roger was born on August 11, 1934 in Randolph, Vt. to the late Robert Mitiguy and Mary Dearing Mitiguy. He grew up in South Royalton, Vt. and graduated from Tufts University in 1956 where he majored in history. He later received his Master's in education administration from the University of Hartford. Roger was married to the former Barbara Stevens with whom he had four children. He later married the former Patricia Claypoole.
Roger wished to leave the world a better place for future generations and dedicated his career to educating children. He taught at Nathan Hale Junior High School and Pulaski High School in New Britain, Conn. before becoming principal at Greensboro High School, Greensboro, Vt. He and his family moved to Proctor, Vt. where he was the principal of Proctor High School from 1965 - 1977. As an educator, he was actively involved in the Vermont Principals Association (formerly the Vermont Headmasters Association) where he served on the executive council and various athletic committees. He was also a State representative to the National Federation of State High School Associations.
As a young man, Roger was a talented trumpet player and an outstanding athlete with a love of baseball. Throughout his life, he remained an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an early advocate of protecting wilderness and wetland areas through his commitment to Ducks Unlimited. He was a vibrant and passionate man who cared deeply about his home state of Vermont.
A caring father, Roger will be best remembered by family and friends as a natural story-teller who enjoyed a good laugh. In his later years, Roger moved to Maine to be closer to his son.
He is survived by his four children: Susan Walsh and husband Kevin of Fawn Grove, Penn. and their children Sean and Sara; Cynthia Lane and husband Bo of Harpster, Idaho, and their children Brandon, Amanda, Luke, Ebben, and Emily; Dana Mitiguy and wife Janice of Cumberland, and their children Cameron, Doug, Julia, and Jocelyn; and Lisa Mitiguy and husband Alfredo Gutierrez of Washington, DC; and his brother Gary Mitiguy and wife Jeanine of Milton, Vt. and their children Nicole, Devin, and Jennifer.
The Mitiguy Family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at The Cedars for their kindness and care given to Roger.
A memorial service is planned for a later date. To offer words of condolence to the family, sign a guest book and share memories, go to the obituary page at www.independentdeathcare.com

The Mitiguy Family,

My years working with Roger at Proctor H.S. provided me the opportunity to learn and grow under the guidence of this dedicated principal. I'm sadden by the loss of a friend, colleague and mentor.
Roger's contribution to the Proctor community was his leadership in creating a deep tradition of student pride to succeed in the classroom, in athletics and within the community. He helped raise the standards of the Proctor educational program during his tenure as princpal.

I was saddened to read of the death of Roger. 1965-1977 were banner years at Proctor High School. He was very instrumental in acquiring a very diligent, hard working, and capable faculty. Although sports came to the forefront he always emphasized the importance of academics and insured that they were a top priority. With the generosity of Bill Taranovich Roger was the leading force in the developement of the "T&T" athletic complex. The winter carnival which was an annual event prior to February vacation each year was originally brought about under Roger's administration.
Roger was an outstanding principal and a true task master. It was very comfortable to work for him as you always knew where you stood.
I was fortunate not only to work for him but had the opportunity to hunt and fish with him.
I have many fond memories of Roger Mitiguy
