Joan Appel Carroll Garner

Joan Appel Carroll Garner, 83, of Beaumont at Bryn Mawr, died peacefully surrounded by family on March 6, 2012. Wife of the late John C. Garner and beloved mother of Marjorie Carroll, Barbara Christofilis (Jack), Debra Koval (Charles) and Michael Wilson (Chandra); also survived by grandchildren Tyler Koval, Caitlin Koval, and Alex Wilson, as well as her sister, Katherine Muskat and cousin, Holly Silverthorne. Born in 1928 in Albany, New York, Joan was the daughter of Kenneth E. and Madeleine H. Appel of Ardmore. She attended the Baldwin School ('46), attended Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, then graduated from the University of Colorado in 1950 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Joan was an artist and an art teacher, also teaching first and fifth grades. While married to her first husband, John Carroll, she taught in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Guatemala. Upon returning to the United States, she taught in Westminster, Colorado for nine years until she returned home to the Main Line. She then taught at the Caley Road School in King of Prussia for many years until her retirement in 1981. Joan traveled extensively throughout her life, and enjoyed painting and reading in her spare time. She was fortunate to have many lifelong friends and a loving family. The family wishes to thank Nelly Carney and family for their care and support. Her Memorial Service will be held on Sat. May 12th, 10 AM in Main Line Unitarian Church, 816 S.
