Beverly Schiffrin Obituary

Beverly C. Schiffrin nee Sadwith), 92, a 58 -year resident of Lower Merion, died April 15 at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne. Mrs. Schiffrin was an avid gardener, art collector and an accomplished creator of beautiful handcrafts. She was extremely active in her community, serving as an officer of the home and school associations of the Bala School, Bala-Cynwyd Junior High and Lower Merion High Schools. Mrs. Schiffrin also served for many years as the President and Board member of Main Line Reform Temple. Politically active, she was an integral part of the Lower Merion Democratic Committee, and served as a member of the Democratic State Committee as well as a Democratic candidate for the Pennsylvania State Legislature. In 1965, Mrs. Schiffrin, along with her late husband of 61 years, Albert W. Schiffrin and others, founded the Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund. In 1973, she was appointed by Governor Milton Shapp to the then State College and University Board of Directors. The following year, Mrs. Schiffrin was asked to be one of the first three women to serve on the Board of Directors of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. More recently, she was the past President of Eldernet of Lower Merion-Narberth. In later years, Mrs. Schiffrin enjoyed spending time each week as a membership volunteer at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Professionally, Mrs. Schiffrin was President of Coronet Container Corporation and a Director of Industrial Washing Machine Corporation. She was trained as a laboratory technician and worked as a medical transcriber in the operating room at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey during World War II. She attended the University of Michigan, where she was president of her sorority. Mrs. Schiffrin is survived by her three children, Peter (Cynthia), Richard (Barbara) and Susan; and five grandsons, David, Daniel, Philip, Andrew and Benjamin. The family respectfully requests that contributions in her memory be sent to the Albert & Beverly Schiffrin Award of the Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 346, Ardmore, PA 19003 or a charity of the donor's choice..
