Elise S. Meade

Elise S. Meade, Mere words cannot convey the loss of Elise Story Metzger Meade, who passed away on Tuesday, March 27th, at Bryn Mawr Hospital. She was 93 years old, and she will be greatly missed. Born in Lankenau Hospital in 1918, she was the daughter of the late Frank Knowles and Elise Story Metzger of St Davids, PA and a subsequent survivor of the Spanish Flu epidemic. Elise graduated from Springside School in Chestnut Hill, PA in 1936, after which she enjoyed a lavish debut and completed a year of college. She was married in 1941 to the late Edward Grant Meade. Elise is best known for her debutante and bridal consulting business that she started in 1960 that thrived for the better part of 20 years. She was also employed by Dunwoody Retirement Village in Newtown Square, PA as their Director of Activities for a decade, following which she became the coordinator of all functions held at Appleford in Villanova, PA for 13 years until her retirement at age 74. She was a member of the Dames of the Loyal Legion and held the position of Historian for their National Board. She was an avid golfer, winning many trophies in her youth, and a passionate traveller whose wanderings took her from Hawaii and the Caribbean to Europe, and from Greece, Turkey and Israel, to North Africa and Kenya. She is survived by a daughter, Elise Stokes Meade, wife of the late Thomas E. Bingenheimer, of Rosemont, PA a granddaughter, Mrs Elise Story Picard and a great grandson, Brooks Thomas Picard. A private gravesite service was held on Tuesday, April 3rd, at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Salvation Army or to the Montgomery County SPCA.
