ALAN CRAWFORD, JR., Investment Advisor, Conservationist, Civic Leader. Alan Crawford, Jr., of Devon, Pennsylvania, died peacefully at his beloved Little Brook Farm on August 23, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was 88. Before retiring in 1986, he was the managing partner of the Philadelphia office of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., a private bank headquartered in New York City. He joined the firm in 1957 and was made partner in 1974. Prior to that, he was employed at Stroud & Co., Philadelphia. He was a member of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. He was an active civic leader, serving on many corporate and not-for-profit boards, including SKF Industries, Inc.; Western Savings Bank; Cass County Iron Company; Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross (serving as Chairman 1977-79); Pennsylvania Horticultural Society; The Zoological Society of Philadelphia; The Academy of Natural Sciences; United Way of Philadelphia (chairing the Management Committee from 1977-79); The Ludwick Institute; Philadelphia Charity Ball; Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades; the Pennsylvania Chapter of The Nature Conservancy; Chesapeake Bay Foundation; RARE Center for Tropical Conservation; Wilson Ornithological Society; Cornell Lab of Ornithology; and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association. He was a member of St. David's Church, where he served twice on the vestry. He was a member of The Philadelphia Club; The Racquet Club; The Fourth Street Club; The Union League of Philadelphia; The Rabbit; The Links Club (New York); and Gulph Mills Golf Club. He was also a member and served on the boards of The Hillsboro Club; Pohoqualine Fish Association (of which he was President, 1977-1986); The Mill Dam Club; and The Anglers Club of Philadelphia. An avid fly-fisherman and ornithologist, he traveled all over the world pursuing both activities. He actively supported land and wildlife conservation, locally, regionally, and nationally. He attended the Episcopal Academy, graduated from St. Marks School (Southborough, Massachusetts) in 1944, and attended Princeton University. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1944-45, and in the US Air Force from 1950-51. Son of Alan and Dorothy Hurd Crawford, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Townsend; son Alan III (wife Robin Thomson); daughters Elizabeth Hucker (husband David), Barbara "Bebe" Feimster, and Susan Stevens (husband Benjamin M., III); granddaughters Julia, Carolyn and Eliza Crawford, Nathalie Feimster, and Hannah Stevens; grandsons Connor Feimster and Samuel Stevens; step-grandchildren Michael Hucker (wife Jillian Hodges) and Lauren Hucker; and a great-granddaughter, Hadley Hucker. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 11 AM, in the Chapel at St. David's Church, 763 Valley Forge Road, Wayne, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camp Pasquaney (5 S. State St., Concord, NH 03301), Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association (1700 Hawk Mountain Rd., Kempton, PA 19529), or Chesapeake Bay Foundation (6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403).
