David S. J. Smith, 77, of Radnor, beloved husband of Mary ("Siddy") for 50 years, died on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the Bryn Mawr hospital. Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, David attended the Haverford School before graduating in 1955 from St. Paul's School in Concord, NH. David earned his degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963 after serving more than three years in the U.S. Marine Corps. David's service in the Marine Corps engendered a life-long allegiance to the Marines and all those who serve in the US Armed Forces. Prior and subsequent to his time in the Marine Corps, he was a member of The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, a unit of the Pennsylvania National Guard. During his time at the University of Pennsylvania, he was a member of the Sphinx Senior Honor Society while also serving as the undergraduate president of both the St. Elmo Club of Philadelphia and the Mask and Wig Club. He later served on St. Elmo's graduate board for many years. Following college and his military service, David worked in the securities business for 51 years where he was forever fascinated by the markets. He began his finance career in 1963 with de Haven and Townsend, Crouter and Bodine and spent his final 30 years at Janney Montgomery Scott, during which time he held roles as both financial advisor and branch manager. Always an ardent supporter of local businesses, David was a former Chairman of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce and also served as a long time board member. One of David's favorite institutions was "The Rabbit" which he joined in 1974 and later served as President. David was also a member of the Merion Cricket Club and The Courts. Predeceased by his parents Edward B. Smith, Jr. and Frances Paul Smith (nee Mills) and brothers Paul M. Ingersoll and Henry McK. Ingersoll. In addition to his wife Siddy, he is survived by his sister Lalla deRham (Charles deRham), children Brint (Gretchen), Eliza (John Scheck), Norris (Staci), grandchildren Griffin, Mia and Henry Smith, and Zachary Scheck. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 10th at St. David's Church, 763 S. Valley Forge Road, Wayne, PA 19087.
