Eliza Sargeant Myers Miller

1927 - 2014

Eliza Sergeant Myers Miller, 86 years, of Saint Davids, PA., died peacefully on August 6, 2014 at Sunrise Assisted living in West Chester. The eldest daughter of Charles and Gertrude Myers, Eliza was born in St. David's, PA in 1927 in the home on Midland Avenue where she would spend the next eighty two years. She attended the Shipley School, Wells College, and the Pierce Business School. Eliza married Samuel C. Miller in 1949 and served as his invaluable partner at home and in their business, American Pool Service Corporation. A lover of travel, history, chrysanthemums, Ice Dancing, Broadway Musicals, The Crater Club in Essex, NY, and mystery novels, Eliza was a volunteer for the American Red Cross during World War II, and later served with The Girl Scouts of America, The Please Touch Museum of Philadelphia, the Women's Exchange of Wayne, Wayne Public Library and Meals on Wheels. A member of the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society, she participated in the annual skating shows, served on numerous committees, started the broom hockey program, and represented the club in Ice Dancing competitions with her husband, Sam. An avid horticulturalist, Eliza loved gardening and completed the Master gardening program at Longwood Gardens, as well as studying horticulture at the Barnes Foundation. She was a devoted friend of Bill W. for over 44 years. Eliza was predeceased by her husband Samuel Clarke Miller in 2008, her sister Gertrude Ten Broeck in 2001 and her brother C. Twiggs Myers in 2014. She is survived by her daughters, Susan ( Joseph ) Curtin, Wendy Miller (Robert Harper), and her son Mark ( Tina )Miller, her grandchildren Sheila ( Joe)Vaccaro, Maeve Curtin, Riane Harper (Sam Travers), Claire Harper,Colleen Harper, Edward Miller, C. Twiggs Miller, and Kelley Miller and her great-grandchildren, Julian and Elias Vaccaro. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 23, at 10:00 am in the chapel at Old St. David's Church in Wayne. PA.
