Elizabeth Walker Knorr

Elizabeth Walker Knorr, Elizabeth Walker Knorr, recently of Gladwyne, PA aged 97, died Sunday, April 13th in Bryn Mawr Hospital. She had been living for a few years at Bryn Mawr Terrace in Bryn Mawr. Elizabeth "Betty" Knorr was born in Holyoke, MA in 1916, the daughter of Herman and Clara Walker. She grew up there and in W. Springfield, attended The Walnut Hill School in Natick, MA and Mount Holyoke College in S. Hadley, MA from which she graduated in 1938 with a BA and an MA. In 1939 she married John K. Knorr of Wayne, PA and spent therest of her life in the Philadelphia area, first in Wayne, then in Wynnewood and for the past 30 years in Gladwyne where the couple built a Williamsburg style house with gardens. Betty taught French at The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr for a decade, but her real love was horticulture. She studied with Mrs. Barnes at The Barnes Foundation, was an active member of the BaIa Cynwyd Garden Club and worked on her gardens, first in Wynnewood and then in Gladwyne where the formal 18th century style garden was frequently on area garden tours. Betty was active for fifty years as a member of The Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday School and serving on various committees, one of them connected with the grounds for which she helped in planning and executing the current planting around the church buildings. Betty and her husband were avid golfers and enjoyed playing at the Philadelphia Country Club and in the summer in Blue Hill, Maine. Betty is survived by her daughter, Betsy Payne of Boxford, MA, two grandsons and three great-grand daughters. Her Service and Interment will be private at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.
