Elizabeth Woods Obituary

Elizabeth Faries Woods, 78, of Merion Station died Tuesday May 7, 2013, at Bryn Mawr Hospital. She was born December 12, 1934, in Lewisburg, PA, the daughter of Alice (Powell) and George Faries, MD. Liz, known in her childhood as Sissie, grew up in Lewisburg where she attended Lewisburg High School and received her bachelor's degree from Bucknell University. For years a center city Philadelphia resident, she later received a master's degree from Temple University. She taught for 28 years at Furness High School in South Philadelphia and was a longtime teacher/consultant with the Philadelphia Writing Project. After retiring from teaching, she volunteered with the Associated Services for the Blind -- researching and recording monthly on scholarship and new developments in archaeology and anthropology. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, William J. Woods, her son, Christian, her daughter, Catherine (Gregory Schaper), her beloved twin granddaughters, Athen and Anja, and a step-grandson, Seth. She is also survived by a sister, Ann Killam, and a brother, George B. Faries, Jr. MD (Mary Linn). Liz was deeply moved by her travels with her brother to Normandy and a number of small towns in France with WWII veterans and relatives from the 29th Infantry Division with which their father's medical Battalion (the 104th) had served. The family is arranging for trees to be planted in Liz's memory in lieu of flowers. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact Herbein's Garden Center at 610-965-9585. A memorial service will be held on June 8th at 11am at the WEST LAUREL HILL CEMETERY, 225 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA www.forever-care.com. A warm, loving, intelligent and understanding person, Liz enriched our lives and our world. She will be always missed and loved and forever in our hearts.

I am very sad to learn about Liz's passing. I knew her from Furness High School where I taught for more than 25 years. Liz always had the biggest smile on her face whenever we saw each other in the hallway or at a meeting. She had such a wonderful rich and happy laugh I will always remember. how lucky all of us were to have her in our lives! What a wonderful legacy she leaves to everyone whose life she touched. Please know that Liz and all of you will be in my heart and in my prayers.
