Helen Chauner Obituary

Helen H. Chauner a resident of Vi at Bentley Village, Naples, Florida, died December 18 at North Collier Hospital of advanced pneumonia. She was 94. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Milton, who retired from an actuarial practice in Philadelphia before his death in 1995. Mrs. Chauner is survived by two sons, Frank Chauner of Northbrook, IL and David Chauner of West Chester, PA, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was born Helen Hazel Sandvig in 1919 on a ranch in Plentywood, Montana. Her parents were Lawrence and Hazel Sandvig, who maintained the family ranch until harsh conditions forced the family to move to Great Falls where Helen and her two brothers grew up. She worked her way through Montana State College where she graduated in 1939 and became the first female recipient of a physical education degree in the school's history. One of her proudest early life achievements was being selected one of 70 Golden Eaglet girl scouts in the nation to attend the Girl Scouts of America 1937 international jamboree in Rhinebeck, NY hosted by First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. Following her marriage to Milton Chauner in 1944, the couple lived in San Francisco and Sacramento, California before settling in Rosemont, PA near Philadelphia in 1959 where they raised their sons and lived until retirement to Hawaii in 1982. Helen became an avid golfer and was an active member of the Philadelphia Country Club and the Quail Creek Country Club following her move to Naples in 1996. The family will host a memorial service for Helen at Vi, Bentley Village, Naples Florida in March 2013. For online condolences, visit www.hodgesfhat-naplesmg.com.

I got to meet Helen when she donated Girl Scout uniforms to our museum. What a wonderful lady. I enjoyed hearing her stories and memories. I wish I had known her longer.
