Homer C. Curtis M.D.

Homer C. Curtis, M.D., age 96, formerly residing in Haverford, Pa., passed away on June 4, 2013 at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, Pa. Dr. Curtis was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of five children of George Nathaniel Curtis and Annie Hindley Curtis. As a highly respected psychoanalyst, teacher, and member of local, national, and international analytic organizations, Dr. Curtis made prodigious contributions to the analytic community and profoundly influenced the lives of countless practitioners and patients. He had a practice out of his home in Haverford and at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital. At various times, he served as president of the Philadelphia Association for Psychoanalysis, president of the American Psychoanalytic Association, professor of psychiatry at Hahnemann Medical College, adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and founder of the Russian American Education Exchange for the advancement of psychoanalysis. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society in 1997. He is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, Enid, his children Kathryn (Jack) Christensen, John (Susan), Paul (Bernadette), Carolyn (Ron Richman), Deborah, and Scott (Jeanne), fifteen grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Richard, who died December 18, 2011, from esophageal cancer. Memorial donations for Dr. Curtis may be made to "Rick's Run," benefitting esophageal cancer research, and sent to Judith Curtis, 42 Plymouth Rd., Springfield, Pa. 19064. There will be a private family observance on Father's Day, June 16, and a memorial observance at a later date to be announced. He will be greatly missed.
