James Spencer Heaney

James Spencer Heaney, James Spencer Heaney age 86, on February 3, 2013, of Villanova, son of the late Samuel Spencer Heaney and the late Margaret "Peggy" Heaney of Bala Cynwyd, husband of the late Maria Victoria Mora Heaney, beloved father of James Joseph Heaney and Hunter Mora Heaney, brother of the late Barbara H. Carvolth and Janet Heaney, and uncle of Spencer Heaney. After graduating from Lower Merion High School and enrolling at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, James "Jim" Heaney volunteered for the US Army Air Corps during World War II and worked as a Crew Chief on B-24J Liberator bombers. He returned to graduate from Wharton where he rowed for the University of Pennsylvania crew, and continued that passion as a member of Vesper Boat Club, rowing alongside his friend, Jack Kelly. With his Vesper teammates he represented the US in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, won the US national championships for the four without and the eight in 1953, and competed in the second Pan American Games in Mexico City in 1955. A great lover of music and passionate art collector, he early on identified a rising artist named Picasso who he was very excited about and purchased some of his early work including a print of "The Frugal Repast" for $15. Jim continued his athletics as a long time member and avid squash and tennis player at the Merion Cricket Club. Jim was an successful stock broker throughout his long professional career serving as a Vice President of Investments at Drexel Burnham and later at Legg Mason Wood Walker, but he always maintained that his greatest accomplishment and source of pride was raising his two sons; James a network administrator currently residing in Rochester, NY and Hunter, Founder and Executive Director of US based non-profit The Voice Project. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr PA on Friday Feb 8th at 1pm.
