Lois Hassler Smith

Lois Hassler Smith a resident of The Quadrangle since Oct. 1994, died Monday, January 14, 2013. Mrs. Smith was born in 1922 in Phila, the daughter of the late Margaret and Gilbert Hassler. Educated in Public School there; she earned an A.B. from Bryn Mawr College in 1943, an M.A. in Classics at Johns Hopkins University in 1948, and an M.L.S. in Library Science at Catholic Univ. in 1975. She taught Latin in private and public schools for 4 years before becoming a librarian. She was Asst., then Administrative Librarian at Harvard University's Dumbarton Oaks Byzantine Research Library in Washington D.C. from 1946 to 1968, then joined the staff of Northern Virginia Community College where she was Coordinator of Library Services from 1970 to 1983, then Director of Learning Resources from 1984 until her retirement in 1988. Throughout her life Mrs. Smith was active in church and community affairs, including serving for 13 years on the Board of Directors of the Stonehurst Homeowners Association, with six terms as President, as well as on other boards and Fairfax County Committees. At the Quadrangle she organized and was Archivist from 1995 to 2008, and served as Chair of the Pet Committee for many years. She was chair of her 1943 class for Annual Giving at Bryn Mawr College for many years. In 1963 she married William Montgomery Smith, a widower and attorney in private practice; he died in 1974. Services will be held 11:30 AM, Saturday, February 16, 2013 at The Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr, PA with a reception to follow at The Quadrangle, 3300 Darby Rd, Haverford, PA at 1 PM.
