Raymond Albed Obituary

Raymond J. Albed, Sr., age 79, of Wayne, PA and Cape May, NJ, passed away on October 12, 2014 after a prolonged illness. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Samuel and Najla Albed (nee Birbarah). Ray was a 1957 graduate of Penn State University. He was a Sigma Pi Fraternity member and an active alumnus. Ray spent his youth between Philadelphia and Cape May, NJ where his parents owned rug stores in both locations. He was President of Albed Rug Company from 1960-1999. He was President of ORRA for three terms and was still a member of the board of directors. He was the founder of the first Oriental Rug Fair in the United States. Even after retirement, Ray remained active in the business, consulting when needed and as a certified appraiser. Outside of work, Ray was very active in the Lions Club and was a multi-term President of the Wayne, PA chapter. He was also a longtime member of the Wayne Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife Shirley (nee Caldwell), with whom he shared 54 years of marriage, his children Renee, Ray Jr., and Michelle, who have all participated in working for the Albed Rug Company, his sister Laurice, his daughter-in-law, Nancy and his grandson, Thomas and his niece and nephew and many cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to his Life Celebration, Monday, November 3, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Wayne Presbyterian Church, 125 E. Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, PA. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ray's memory to the Wayne Presbyterian Church at the above address or the Chester County SPCA, 1212 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester, PA 19380 would be appreciated. To the Albed family, Stephanie and I send our thoughts to each of you. As you know, your father was a client of ours but more than that he made me laugh with all of his stories. Each time I drive by your store ( which is everyday), I will be thinking of you all

I wish to convey my condolences to his wife Shirley, son Ray Jr., daughters Michelle and Renee, and sister Laurice. As a neighborhood/school friend of Ray Jr., I have many happy memories of times spent at the Albed's home. As young teenagers, on weekends, Ray Jr. and I would often help, in the Wayne rug store. During breaks, we would watch football games, play backgammon, and share a lunch, which was often a delicious Italian hoagie, from a local deli. I remember Ray Jr's father as a kind and generous man, and I am very sorry to hear about his passing, and your loss.
