Robert Schmader Obituary

Robert E. Schmader, "Bob" age 57, of Newtown Square, PA, died peacefully at home on April 13, 2014 after a brave and inspiring battle with pancreatic cancer. The beloved son of Rosemary (nee Tobin) and the late James Schmader, his hero, he was born on June 25, 1956 in Bryn Mawr, PA. He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Susan Jordan-Schmader, and adored children, Jaclyn and Daniel. He is also survived by his dear siblings, Laurie VanTrieste (David), Lynn Forster (the late Don), and Barry (Liz nee Costa). Bob was employed in the financial industry for many years, most recently with PNC Bank. Bob spent many years as a devoted coach, fan and referee of Radnor Township sports. His enthusiasm for developing players and youth sports was admired by many and will be sorely missed in the community. He considered his greatest accomplishment by far as raising his children into happy successful adults. Relatives and friends are invited to Bob's Life Celebration Mass on Monday April 21, 11 AM at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, 31 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010 with family visitation starting at 9:30 AM. Interment will be private. If so desired, donations may be made in Bob's memory to Our Mother of Good Counsel Church or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org), 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266. Bob coached my son in little league. He gave all the boys nicknames. Gumbo was my son's because he was born in New Orleans. He was an inspiration, a class guy in every way. I regret that I didn't know about his passing as I would have attended the service. I'm sure that when Bob enters heaven, all the ball players will line up to tip their caps to welcome him

We are so saddened by the news of Bob's passing. We truly enjoyed his friendship and commiserating during Holy Cross lacrosse games. It was clear that he loved his family and enjoyed life. Please know our heartfelt prayers are with each of you.

Its really hard to imagine a time when I was not friends with Bob. I know we met at Malvern Prep in 1969 but with Bob there was always a comfortable feeling like we knew each other forever. Bob and I would talk as most high school chums would of sports and girls (not in that order). Bob supported me in my high school running as I did for his high school Baseball. When we went off to college Bob to Fairfield and Me to Merrimack, holidays and summer break we continued our friendship...the Schmader family threw epic parties! as time went on life got in the way and we lost touch but Bob was never out of my thoughts. Then Facebook enabled me to reconnect with Bob. When I got a call from Joe Hobson telling me of "Schmades" plight I immediately called and asked what I could do, he told me to take his mind off of his disease for the time we spoke on the phone. So I called him every other day with a dirty joke and then some reminiscing...for three months that's what I did...I'm grateful that I was able to organize a group of Bob's high school friends for a visit and that I was able to speak with him a couple of days before he was "called up" I was fortunate to be able to tell him that I loved him and that he had a big impact on my life. I am proud to call Bob Schmader my friend...I love you Bob!

I am so sorry to learn of Bob's passing. We were classmates at Malvern. Bob would give me a ride to school in the mornings. He would pick me up at the intersection of Goshen Road and Echo Valley Lane. I recall his car did not have a column or stick shift. It was put in gear by pushing a button on the dash. They were great times.
Rest in Peace Bob

Bob Schmader entered my orbit of awareness in 1967 or so as the same-aged kid who lived down the street from my grandmother on Barrett Avenue and who went to the rival Catholic School, Good Counsel. (I was a Saint Katherine wildcat) I came to know Bob better when he went to Malvern with me in 1970. I was jealous of Bob when he graduated from Fairfield U in 78 because he had like a job immediately with Dun and Bradstreet. . In 09, in the course of organizing for the 35th, Bob and I reconnected and what a delight it was.I shall never forget sitting on my pool deck in December of 13 (Florida living) when I called Bob to tease hm about his urgent sounding Facebook post. It was then I learned of the grave diagnosis which he had been given. We stayed in touch immediately thereafter and had several marathon conversations rapping about Hot Shoppes, Good Counsel, Schmader's garage and the Eagles. "Hop", he would say in that distinct Philly drawl "you know people re saying to me now, "Oh my God what can I do for you?" I tell them well I know you cannot come out and clean the gutters on my roof so just make me forget for however brief a period of time that I have this disease" Bob , I was happy to have obliged through the laughs and guffaws to share some mirth in those last conversations. I will tell you this my friend, what will never be forgotten is your unique style and charm. You'll live mythically in the hearts of the many people whose lives you graced and who love you accordingly.
