Stephanie Azar Obituary

Stephanie Yen-Mun Liem Azar, 26 years of age, of Haverford PA passed away on July 19, 2013, in New York City. Beloved wife of Pablo D. Azar and cherished daughter of Gie and Lisa Liem, she is also survived by her brother Jasper and her maternal grandparents Fook Hing and June Li. Steph was living in New York with her husband and their two cats, Asterix and Obelix, while attending medical school at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. She met Pablo at Harvard while conducting her post baccalaureate studies. She was also a talented musician, obtaining at the age of 20 a Bachelors in Music from The Curtis Institute of Music majoring in Organ. She had performed usually for fund raising purposes at locations such as Spivey Hall, the Wanamaker Organ, St. John's Cathedral Hong Kong, and Church of the Redeemer Bryn Mawr. She was a very accomplished singer, having sung for the talented Madrigals while at Curtis and at many churches worldwide. Her interests were diverse ranging from several years at NASA's space camp in Huntsville, scuba diving in the Galapagos Islands, learning intensive Spanish for the volunteer urgent care clinic in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, and a passion for medicine and helping others, especially those who lived with limited resources. She travelled the world extensively, loved animals, the arts, family and most of all her husband Pablo, who she married barely 4 weeks before her passing. Steph was never afraid of challenges, having overcome a stroke at the age of 17 that resulted in tremors on the left side of her body. Undaunted, she researched the cause of her tremors and before long became a spokesperson for the "We Move" organization focused on movement disorders. In the two days before a deep brain stimulator was surgically implanted, she performed an organ concert to benefit the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Association and appeared on television with CBS health newscaster Stephanie Stahl. Shortly following brain surgery she was invited to speak at the first national symposium on movement disorders addressing neurologists and neurosurgeons in Washington DC. Giving back and helping others was not just fundamental to her personality but a whole way of life. Her Memorial Service will be held on Sat. July 27th., 11am in Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral: 3723 Chestnut Street(38th St.between Chestnut and Market Sts.). Free parking will be available at the same surface parking, entrance being on 39th St. between Chestnut and Market Sts. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to either Curtis Institute of Music, Please Touch Museum, or the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. Dear Friends
I extend my deepest condolences at your loss of Stephanie, your lovely, loving and brilliantly talented daughter, and new spouse. I was so privileged to know Stephanie and to have taught her in Middle School. She lit up the room and inspired us all. I hold you in the Light at this most difficult time.
