William W. McCreedy Obituary
William (Bill) W. McCreedy, of West Chester, Pa, another of the" greatest generation", died peacefully of lung cancer on Friday, May 3o, 2014. A much loved family man, he was known for his humor, his gregarious nature, and the forthright conviction by which he lived his life.
Bill was born in Philadelphia on January 2, 1926 to Marguerite White McCreedy and William Greer McCreedy, a Vice President at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank. Initially residents of Logan, Philadelphia, they moved to Elkins Park when he was in elementary school, where he spent the rest of his youth. Bill attended Cheltenham High School, class of 1943, graduating early at age 17 to follow his dream of becoming a naval aviator during World War ll. He joined the navy and entered pre-flight school. After a series of assignments around the country, he entered the Naval Academy at the war's end. He graduated from the USNA in 1950, and was commissioned in the United States Air Force, newly formed as a separate force after WWll.
Bill served with valor during the Korean War as a pilot of C-54's, transporting troops, supplies and evacuating the wounded. He was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement while carrying out his duties. He resigned from active duty in 1953 after serving as an ROTC instructor at RPI.
Following military service, Bill worked at Click Clock and Container Corporation of America as a packaging engineer, then launched a career in finance, first as a stock broker with Merrill Lynch and then as an investment and trust officer with the Fidelity Bank of Philadelphia. Upon retiring in the mid-1980's, he spent his time at the Hopkinson House in Philadelphia when not sailing or working on his old wooden Dickerson on the Chesapeake Bay. In 2012, after nearly two decades in Philadelphia, he moved to West Chester to be closer to family.
Bill is survived by his three children and their spouses: daughters Dale McCreedy (Alex Taylor) of Exton, Pa., Jill M. Beringer (Rick) of Hockessin, De. and son, William Greer McCreedy (Linda) of Norfolk, Va. He also has eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Alberta McCreedy Porch.
